Interpertation of US Army Aptitude Tests from mid 1960's?

I have wondered what the individual area scores mean and which score is the best reflection of overall intelligence?? if there is in fact such a score. What is the catagory / rank for a score of 58 for the AFQT Group III.. What is the highest score possible in any or all catagories?

Found my records for Nov 1966 testing, would like to know what the heck it all means.

The problem is that those tests and the methodology used was never release to us mere mortals.

To make things worse, the whole system was revamped in the mid seventies or early eighties.

Almost everything that you find on the subject has little to do with the tests that we took in the sixties.

The AFQT test that we took was a stand alone test with scores that went to 100. (Yes, I am certain of that, because my form 20 shows a score of 100 for the AFQT). Also, as part of a national study on aging, I retook the same test recently.

Now they compute the score by sampling answers from the other tests. They then apply some weird algorithms to them and come up with a lot of different results depending on what the answer is to be used for.

You can tell from the questions on YA that it is not as simple as when we took the test.

From what I have been able to tell trying to research this topic, many of the individual test that we took went to 150.

I suspect that that was the actual number of correct answers rather than some adjusted score.

I know that eight of my scores are 145 to 150 and I have seen a number of others who have scores up to 150 on the individual tests.

I have never seen anything official that states a maximum score for any of the tests or whether they all went to 150.

There has to be somebody who knows but they must have all signed a non-disclosure agreement or something because I have never found anyone in the know who will talk.

I have found a number of young know it alls on line who make all sorts of "authoritative" claims. But it is usually clear that they know nothing about what the process was when we were tested.

You simply can not do any meaningful comparison between today's tests and those in use when we took them.

At one time, I spent days on line and found the descriptions for what most/all of the individual tests were. It was very difficult because the number of tests and their names have changed since we took them.

These days, they use all sorts of "norming" for various test scores. So, it is just about impossible to know what any score actually means when compared to others.

Interesting. My AR was also 152. My in was IN: 156. My lowest was the AI which was 94, so I would guess (knowing what a klutz I am), that it is mechanical aptitude.

This was Dec 10, 1959. The form is: DA 20 1 NOV 54

Mine were all in the 130's and 140's in 1971. I know they had 600 of us in a big room and at the end of testing they called my name out to say. I was offered a chance to go to West Point. I asked what was the obligation, 10 years at that time so I took my chances on my enlistment and just did my 2 plus a year I the reserve. Ended up a chaplain assistant with Combat Engineers and doing weekly new troop orientations with my Bn Commander LTC Bruce Crandall..."we were soldiers"

I have my 201 file, and see that my GT score was 135, which is one point short of MENSA. I saw the files of our NCOs back then, and some of them had GT scores of like 60 or 70. The year before getting drafted, I maxed the AFQT @ 100 for the Coast Guard recruiter. When drafted, I was tired and apathetic and got an AFQT of 85.

The AFQT is a percentile score. It means you fell into that percentile of people that took the test. An AFQT score of 58 means you scored better than 58% of the people that took the test.
