Why do people think old folks can't lose fat?

This relates to the Richard Simmons question and some of the pathetic answers regarding age and fat loss. Have any of you seen senior citizens' bodybuilding? A lot of the participants started bodybuilding AFTER retirement. Many were fat and flabby and quite out of shape when starting, only to get themselves into lean, mean competition shape. Sure, it takes a bit of work, but it's not impossible. So why make the excuses for Simmons and anyone else?

    To answer your question - simply ignorance.

    "They" say our metabolism slows down as we age. And in most cases, it does. But it isn't really because of the actual act of aging. It slows down because most people have a terrible diet which encourages MUSCLE LOSS and FAT GAIN. Muscle loss will slow down our metabolism. Slowly but surely it adds up over time. Men also create less and less testosterone as we age and our estrogen production rises. This also leads to muscle loss. But it can be overcome. By eating in a manner to encourage muscle growth AND weight lifting.

    I haven't seen any seniors bodybuilding. So I can't answer that. But for the most part, anyone can lose weight and become fit at any age. It just takes the proper mindset and drive.

    The athletic seniors I run into AND work out with are triathletes.

    They're all lean, mean and are ready to take Social Security to the cleaners.

    Yes.

    The men looked ok - when dressed.

    The one woman - in a leotard - looked grotesque. Muscles and veins!

    She probably looked better dressed too
