washer/dryer for a large family?
Within the next my husband and I will be getting our taxes back, and I'm getting a new washer/dryer (mine was used and broken down when we got them) And I was wondering what a good brand/model would be good for a large family. We have 3 boys and 1 girl. Right now, I've got 3 that aren't in school, 2 of them under 20 months. I want these to last me a while. I can't go out and replace them every year or so (Like I have been with my used ones)
This is my first time buying a washer/dryer and I have no idea what to look for. I'm wanting to go as cheap as we can, but I'd rather get great quality then cheap (but cheap is good!)
Doesn't matter if its a front loader, or a top loader or whatever, just need to make sure its going to last a while and can handle 2 to 3 loads of clothes per day.
Any ideas on a brand/type I should be looking for?
Links would be great!

We had 4 kids growing up as teenagers for many years and went through a few washers not so many dryers. I have always liked whirlpool and maytag. We have now a front loader maytag and whirlpool 7.0 cu ft dryer large capacity with stands
I suggest you try one of two places for the best prices and best brands Sears Lowe's They will give you the best prices around and no one can beat them..
I have two friends in the appliance business one is a technician or repair man the other is in parts they both have been in this business for over twenty years. IMO Whirlpool Maytag Kenmore are the top three brands with less breakdowns and trouble according to them and us having had washers and dryers for 35 years.
Lowe's.com or sears.com will help you with these prices and warranties as well. Energy efficient is almost now a always thing and if you have large loads you want to do less get a large capacity combination. Less water, fewer loads. less money More time.
Good luck with the kids and the laundry

Make sure that you know the type of washer/dryer that you have now... whether it is an electric or gas dryer (check the manual.. if you still have it, in case you aren't sure). Also, for the dryer's drum avoid using plastic. Since you will be doing a lot of loads, a plastic drum will just easily wear out and can melt if you use it too often. Also, take note of the space available for your potential washer and dryer. Try to stick to the same sizes that you had before, if possible, so that you will not have to rearrange furniture in order to make space for the new appliances.
My family just got a dryer right before the holidays (due to a small lint fire) and we got a G&E from Home Depot. It's a gas dryer and so far it's holding up well. So in other words, G&E is a good brand. Also, the dryer before that, and our current washer, are Maytags and we have had these appliances for over 15 years (so you know that this brand is a good brand), with a family of five (2 current teens/adults, married couple and a grandparent).
G&E's and Maytag's are normally reasonable/cheap prices. The quality of the product is great, which really ensures that you will be getting your money's worth and beyond that.

Hi,
If you have the space, I would seriously consider getting a washing machine & a seperate dryer. In a washer/dryer the drying tends to come out creased & still needs ironing whereas in a seperate dryer, the drying cames out uncreased. Also, with a washer/dryer if the washing machine or the dryer part breaks down, you have to replace both.
I have a Hoover washing machine which I have had for 5 years now. I have a seperate dryer which is a Creda and I have had that for 11 years & only one part had to be replaced & that was the door hinge & I managed to get one of these from a dealer on e-bay for £7.

Any from this line would be amazing, I'm like...drooling over them! Lol :o)
You can go to www.sears.com and type in Kenmore Elite :)
They are all energy efficient too! So not only will you have a sturdy washer and dryer that will last a long time, but it will eventually pay for itself in the amount you're cutting off of your electricity bill!

if you want a sturdy, reliable washer and dryer, then go for Miele. they offer quality, robust appliances and are guaranteed to have a life-span of 20 years for normal domestic use. i've had my miele washer for 5 years and hasn't gone wrong yet, and the laundry comes out spotless, even when using the quick-wash cycle. and i have just upgraded my dishwasher and dryer with miele. trust me, you won't look back.

Having gone through several W/D in our lifetime I would tell you to stay away from Bosch if you live in the U.S. Yes, they are high end but if they ever need repair good luck, the parts can get expensive and getting a tech. that knows what they are doing can be a challenge.
I can tell you from experience the Sears tech. told us to purchase American made, Whirlpool Maytag Kenmore. Spending more doesn't garantuee you are getting something that will last longer.

Friend of mine got a Bosch for his family and it has been thrashed daily and is still surviving many years later.
