Why is the name of Norfolk, VA pronounced so differently than it's written?

My wife used to live there. She pronounces it "NAW-fick" as do most residents. (actually the "fick" part should have a "u" instead of an "i" but we can't write that word here.)

Why??

Norfolk is a county in England (I should know i'm English) and I would assume that you pronounce it that way because that is the way we brits pronounce it and Norfolk VA was probably named after Norfolk U.K. where some of the early settlers came from.

Just the same pronunciation with Norfolk and Suffolk in England. Because the 'folk' part is unstressed, it has ended up being pronounced how we are not allowed to spell it.
