I dream of being a teacher but I am 27 with no college experience....?

I am a 27 year old guy with no degree. I like my career now and make just as much as I would if I were a teacher (almost).

The issue I face is that I would really love to be a History or Science teacher or possibly a school counselor. I think about it often enough that I am asking it here.

I live in NY so it is a must to get a masters for any reasonable teaching job.

Is this possible for me? I can get a Masters in virtually anything to become a counselor right? What is the fastest route to a Masters in education?

Perhaps I should just go speak to a college counselor at the school I would consider......

Good Idea!!! I think you just solved your own problem. Go to the counselors at the school of your choice and see just what is needed and if they also have online classes you can take since you are also working. Go for the Gold.

Yes, of course you can do this. It would take 5 years full-time to get a master's degree; if you plan to do it part-time, plan on at least twice that. However, you would still be under 40 if you did that, so it is not an impossibility.

No, you can't get a Master's in "virtually anything" to become a counselor. You would need one in counseling, psychology, or some form of education. You would be of no use if your master's were in electrical engineering or history, I'm afraid, and since there are plenty of people out there with more appropriate credentials, you need to focus a little more on what you want to do.

Talking to a counselor would be a good idea, to let you see whether or not it is worthwhile to you to do this.

First you have to get a Bachelor's degree in education and that takes about 5 years. Then you have to get the Masters which takes another 2 years. Then you have to get a certification. It's really not a fast or easy process.

it's never too late to go to school, and there's no fast way to get your masters if you don't have a bachelor's degree, besides in order to teach you need to complete at least a year of student teaching on top of all the other things you need to complete your teaching program, if you want to rush things then teaching isn't for you, it's one of the few careers that takes the most learning yet receives the worst.

and here's a reality check, teaching is a nightmare, not a dream

You should speak with a school advisor about the best plan of approach. But it's never too late to go to school, change careers, and do something you want to do. If that's what you think you want, then go for it. And you're only 27. I got my bachelor's at 42.

no dumbass, teacher position is one of the most competitive in all of professional schoolisms. if you want to work in a school, try to be a janitor or hallmom or chef. that's about all you've got at this point.

yeah, you should talk to a professional college counselor. lol

besides that, I know that in my state (California) that we have a shortage of qualified math and science teachers.
