In order to fix computer freezing at startup, you must first boot up your CPU in safe mode. This is done by tapping F8 as soon as your start your system.
Once in safe mode you can attempt to fix the problem. If you don’t feel like going to the computer repair shop or buying a new system, the next best thing is to scan your computer with a registry repair program.
Computer freezing comes from errors within the Windows registry. I would recommend cleaning it up. You can perform a free scan at:

Try what the other poster said first- start with the easiest steps but I bet that won't fix it. Many of these pre built systems use cheap parts- your MOBO could be bad and shorting out. Return it if you are still under warranty. HP's recently had thousands of these problems- well documented on the net.

From safe mode, run a complete virus scan. Also, from safe mode, open your Control Panel, and go to the Recovery icon. Try to restore the computer to some previous save point when it was working.
