Why do people care more about the Haitian earthquake than the Samoan earthquake?

Like the title says, why?

Didn't the Samoan earthquake register a 8.0 on the richter scale, while the Haitian earthquake registered a 7.0?

Update:

Pain? No I was just curious, it sounds unfair doesn't it?

Update 2:

Ok first of all, I know the samoan earthquake happend in september 09, the question is, "Why do they care more about Haiti than Samoa?" I did not ask for your ethical considerations. MYA1500.

The Samoan tsunami story was huge in New Zealand and was voted the top news story of 2009 and beacuse of the close relationship between New Zealand and Samoa it recieved far more attention from NZ media then Haiti is at the moment.

But then again I think its not the size of the actual disasters themselves but the number of people that are victimized by it. Over 200,000 people have died in Haiti which may explain why the US are really them their full attention, because it is a massive task .

If I'm not mistaken, the Samoa Island earthquake happened in September 2009. It takes an insensitive individual to compare the Richter's scale to determine which is most important right now. Lives are at stake, no matter the scale, when and where it happened. It's devastating. Our attention is on the Haitians right now, the Samoans are recovering.

I hear your pain, but I was around for the Samoan earthquake and a lot of people cared. They had the same trouble that Haiti has, you couldn't get in, didn't know where to send money. I hear your pain. If you wanted to send money, here's a couple places. God. Bless
