What do you think of this ritual my church did?Would you do it?

Okay...so my church is evangelical Christian I think, and they did something kind of OUT THERE.

The pastor brought a HUGE cross and put it next to the podium where he speaks and had everyone write down their sins on a piece of paper and told everyone to get a nail and hammer it onto the wooden cross. As people did this everyone was screaming and crying as they nailed it on the cross. If you chose not to write anything or nail anything down everyone would come up to you to pray for you!

I think it sounds quite a neat idea however I don't agree with the victimization of those who didn't take part. Something like that should be a free choice, not forced.

This one church I once went to had a similar thing they would do once in a while. They would bring out a cross, except it would have a nail sticking out in the middle, and everyone would right down their sins and what they're struggling with in life, and stab it through onto the cross. It's supposedly meant to signify giving up your sins to Christ and letting him carry the weight of our sins, in which you let The Lord lead you in your life. I haven't done it personally, and I'm not really sure if I would. I understand how it can be symbolic, but I still wouldn't be too eager to try it.

A good trick of public speakers- get people personally involved if you want them to do what you tell them to do. Same thing happens in other gatherings, but not with sins and a cross, and are just as effective-- like Amway meetings. Certain people figure out how they can mess with other peoples' minds and convince them of anything.

well it sounds like he took Scripture where it tells us to put our burdens at the foot of the Cross, but I don't believe it was meant to be a "public" display??? screaming, really??? I can understand "crying" but not "screaming"...sounds a little over the top, kinda like those churches where "Everybody" has the gift of speaking in tongues and writhing about, which by the way, is not the gift of speaking in tongues, just plain ol embarrasing jibberish and physical acting....Peace/Love and God Bless

I remember reading about how another church did that. Not everyone went up to nail their sin to the cross (there were over 450 people), nor did folks gather around those who didn't participate. I don't believe it was a REQUIREMENT to partake. It WAS a powerful object lesson, though.

Some how I doubt folks were SCREAMING while they did this. Softly crying, yes, but not SCREAMING. I feel you're 'exaggerating' on that part.

You THINK your church is EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN? Don't you know?

I'm a believer, but I don't think I would have done that. You need to talk to the Father in private about your sins, that's what I believe.

That sounds like a bit much. Confessing your sins should be between you and the Lord, not you and the whole church.

sounds as if the pastor was looking for good reading material.

probably read all the books in the house.

They have to do something to entertain the people.

Surely the POWER of God is not there or Christianity would surely explode with converts.
