Games seem to crash randomly on my new computer, anyone know what the problem might be?

I just got a new custom built computer a week or so ago. the specs are:

4GB ram

windows 7 64bit

ati radon HD 5700 series graphics card 2GB

i5 processor

Anyway when ever i play a big game (eg. Sims 3) it just randomly turns the game off without any warning. this is weird cause it usually takes at least 10 seconds to turn off but it just turns off and take me to the desktop. I've tried running it on compatibility mode with windows vista (like i do on my other computer and it works fine) it seemed to last a bit longer but it still crashed after an hour or so. this problem as also occurred when i was using iTunes.

another problem that i had which may be related is while playing any game within 30 minutes of beginning play red and blue lines are displayed vertically across the screen for about 5 minutes before the system restarts. also whenever a new process is started (eg. plug a set of headphones in for the first time, looking at pictures for the first time) it either displays the red and blue lines or just powers off instantly.

Hope someone can help.

thanks,

Caleb

This could be caused by many things.. Outdated drivers, faulty hardware, programs with poor coding, etc. You could try updating all the drivers but I'm going to assume you've already done that. You could run some memory tests, to see if it's the ram. Also remember that Windows 7 is still technically in the "beta" stages since a Service Pack has yet to be released, even though it's for sale in stores. Many problems could still occur in any new OS.

On another note, I actually own The Sims 3, and that game is one of the worst coded, bug-filled games I've ever owned (thanks a lot EA). That game crashes, corrupts saved games, and much more regardless of hardware. So chances are, if that's one of the only games that's giving you trouble, it might not be on your end.

You also noted that you're using the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Be sure the programs you are using are compatible.

Computers crash in most cases for registry problems. When you first buy your computer and bring it home it runs at optimum speed, but over time the registry becomes overloaded with unnecessary files and programs. Some of these files become corrupt and problems develop such as the computer crashing. You can fix these current computer crashes by running a registry cleaners.I should like to commend Registry Easy http://computer-e-book-money.com/ to you ! You can try ! Good luck!

If your computer is new, you might need to update your display drivers. This can be done on your graphics card site or for a laptop you can usually find it on the manufacturer website.
