Do you have any suggestions how to lower my blood pressure?

I am a 36 year old male in good health (I have a healthy BMI and weight, and exercise 5 days a week). However, my blood pressure is high (around 147) and continues to rise. I have high blood pressure in my family.

I really don't want to get on medication. Do you all have any suggestions on what I can do to lower my blood pressure naturally (without medication)?

There are things you can do to help lower your blood pressure. This includes modification of the diet including decreasing salt, cholesterol and saturated fats and increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables. The DASH diet is associated with the greatest reduction in blood pressure and you can search it if you are interested. Also, regular exercise 5 times weekly for at least 1 hour can help lower blood pressure. Excess alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure; therefore you should not consume more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily if you are male or 1 drink daily if you are female. If you smoke, you should quit. Good luck.

One method to lower blood pressure naturally is exercise. Regular physical activity provides several additional benefits including weight reduction and maintenance (overweight people have a higher chance of developing high blood pressure), and lowering of cholesterol levels. Jogging (or even just brisk walking), cycling (stationary or road), aerobics, swimming, calisthenics, and any other physical activity that strengthens the heart are some of the exercises that if done for at least half an hour per day and five days per week will, in as short as two to three months, normally result to lower blood pressure.

Another way (which is best done in conjunction with regular exercise) to lower blood pressure naturally is to improve your diet and eating habits. Limit your intake of red meat and sweets, and eat more fruits and vegetables. Low-fat dairy products and whole grains are also good diet choices. As important as what you eat is how much and how often you eat. One good tip is to eat five times a day (e.g., breakfast, light snack, lunch, light snack, dinner) but eat less than what you normally would for your main meals.

Yet one more way to lower blood pressure is to avoid or minimize your intake of caffeine. Drinking coffee and beverages (including soda and certain energy drinks) has the effect of increasing blood pressure because of its caffeine component, which aggravates stress and increases the heart rate. If you want to have coffee, make it decaf, and instead of soda, drink natural juices. Avoid energy drinks altogether since these are also very high in sugar.

Blurry eyes and eating sweet things has nothing to do with low blood pressure. Also unless your blood pressure is below say 90/50 you are fine. If you have blurry vision and sweets bother you see your doctor and eye doc and find out what is going on. Low blood pressure is not the problem.

Cut salt out of your diet. This means not only table salt but foods high in sodium. You'll want to avoid anything canned, cured, packaged, pre-prepared, processed, pickled, frozen, salty condiments, cheese, etc. Eat fresh, avoid fast food. Avoid caffeine.

    Drink LOTS of water.

Have you had your kidney function checked out? It's a simple blood test.
