20 month old vocabulary milestones?

When you hear that by 20 months of age your toddler should have a vocabulary of 150-300 words, does that mean your toddler should be able to speak those 300 words or just understand what they symbolize?

Also, what are some major milestones of a 20 month old?

A typical 20-month-old has a spoken vocabulary of about 12-15 words, though many children have far more. They should understand up to 200.

    Milestones:

    • Uses a spoon and fork

    • Runs

    • Throws a ball underhand

    • Enjoys helping around the house

    • Takes off own clothes

    • Dumps an object in imitation, such as throwing garbage away

    • Can walk up stairs (but probably not down)

    20 Month Old Milestones

My son only had about 20 words he could say at 20 months and at 24 months only 35 or so but at 27 months his vocabulary exploded and now he has hundreds of words. All kids go at their own pace so try not to worry too much. As long as they are progressing that is what is most important.

  • My daughter is 20 months and understands more than she speaks..she maybe speaks a total of 10 words and has not attempted to form a sentence yet..Shes developed fast in many other ways...

my daughter is 20 months and says about 100 words i guess, but alot of them she doesnt repeat alot... she understands HEAPS more...

the milestones previously listed are correct, i would just add that at this age they should be able to follow simple instructions like "put the book on the table" or "bring me the bear" etc etc...
