Just wandering in ... Does it ever offend you when people say "I don't mind gays as long as they don't..."?

Does it ever bother you when straight people say things like "I don't care what gays do as long as I don't have to see it." Or "I don't mind gays as long as they don't hit on me." These kinds of statements have always bothered me because they seem disingenuous, like people are just don't want to be seen as homophobic. Basically, these statements put the focus of a homosexual's sexuality first, their humanity second.

I am just over thinking it? Or is the pretense good enough for you?

Bonus question: Do you think the government (Democrat OR Republican) sees the repealing of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" as a slippery slope? Like, if it's ok for gays to serve in the military, shouldn't it be ok for them to get married too?

Update:

Mal: I've never agreed that it's wrong for 18-20 year old servicemen to not be able to drink. I think the drinking age is just fine. It's the military recruitment age that's too young.

God yes. I find it so irritating and rude. It definitely has homophobic connotations. We should be allowed to hold hands in public and BE in public and do anything that straight people are allowed to. That statement is just 10 kinds of ugly to me.

It reminds me of when you come out to someone the same sex as you and they laugh nervously and say 'well, I'm fine with it as long as you don't like me. YOU DON'T LIKE ME, DO YOU?!?!!' *sigh* People are just so ignorant..

BQ: Well, not necessarily. The military is a federal matter whereas marriage has always been a state issue. So I think that people would use the repealment of DADT as an argument for gay marriage like the whole 'ie/ so we're good enough to die for you but we're not good enough to be allowed to marry or have rights? what kind of country is this?' thing but I'm not entirely sure that they are holding off on repealing DADT for that reason. I'm pretty sure Obama's supposed to be getting to that in the near future...

YES. Because they're basically saying "its fine if you're gay, just don't be gay around me"

    Doesn't make any sense

Bonus Q: I see your point, and in no way do i support the banning of gay marriage, but the thing with "dont ask dont tell" is the government doesnt know about you being gay. But of course, if you get married to a person of the same sex, they will know that you are gay. So they aren't really the same

You are going to find insensitive people--all over the world----they are not ready to communicate properly and they think that they have to express an opinion on something that is really NONE OF THEIR CONCERN. So please---IGNORE IT. They speak like this because they are nervous about it. You have some big time concerns that are relavent to the gay lifestyle. I wish they would allow the marriages in all 50 states. If you BELIEVE in a cause--then stand up and fight for that cause. Be proud of who you are. OK?? Relax---smile---GOOD LUCK

I doesn't bother me much, normally when people say things like that to me I laugh it off and make a joke out of it concerning straight people. Like when they say "I don't want to know what people do in their bedrooms." I'll say "I totally agree with you...don't you just hate it when you see a pregnant woman. I mean goodness shove it in my face already!" Normally I'll get a few forced laughs, but it shuts them up! And the topic changes swiftly!

  • haha, no. I guess since where I live everyone says "Gay people are going to hell" (unless they're gay or related to someone that is), that's good enough :P .

What bothers me is when girls think that just cause another girl is gay/bi that they want them. There are things as standards :P

It wasn't ok for gay people to be "out" and serve in the military before.. things are SLOWLY improving.

Question 1: Yes, it does irk me at times.

Question 2: You make a very good point. I agree.

I couldn't have said it better.

Bonus Answer: Its the same militaristic society that dictates that a person is old enough to die for his or her country but too young to drink alcohol.

I was trying to come out to one if my friends, without getting half way through saying it she blerted out " you can be gay, just not infront of me." needless to say I haven't talked to her sense then.

if someone said something as stupid as that to me, i'd reply with "well, i don't mind straights as long as i don't have to see it.. wait, i see straight people going at it in public and in the media all the time! sorry, straighty, based on your logic, i don't like ~your kind~. >( "
