    Type 1 in cell A1

    Type 2 in cell A2

    Type 3 in cell A3

    Type 4 in cell A4

Highlight all of these (A1-A4), then click on the small black box and drag it down the page until it starts autoscrolling down.

Once it's fully highlighted... click on the additional menu box(replaced black box) and select "Fill Series"

    Making A List In Excel

If you just want the numbers to display as 0 to 9999, enter 0 in A1 and 1 in A2 and 3 in A3. Highlight A1:A3 and 'click and hold' on the small black rectangle in the bottom right corner of A3. Drag down until the displayed counter reads 9999 and release. The series will automatically fill.

However, leading '0's will not be displayed. If you want the leading 0's, format column A as Text, then repeat the procedure above. Leading 0's will be displayed.

Yes, start your pattern (in your case: 1, 2, 3) in 3 cells going down. Then select those 3 cells and simply "drag" the cursor (when your at the bottom right of the cell) until you have enough numbers you need.
