I'm finally getting my girl! Now what...?

I have 3 male pups, Lucky is 11ish, Miles is almost 8 and Joey will be 5 in the summer. A friend of a friend has a golden border collie mix 6 month old female. She is not being treated well, she doesn;t go for walks, goes outside on a short lead and spend a lot of time in a crate. So, I spoke to the owners and I have decided to take this pup in. And I have a few questions...

When do I get her spayed? Should I give her a lengthy period of adjustment to her new home, or do it as soon as possible? (all my boys are fixed)

When I met her today she peed on the floor. SHe was super excited and just got out of her crate. Could this be submissive peeing or just a puppy bladder thing?

Lastly, (for now anyways), she has been crate trained, and I don't believe in that. Will it be an easy transition from crate to no crate? Or am I going to have an issue there? I have never crate trained, I was fortunate enough to have somewhat well behaved dogs and again, fortunate enough to be able to dedicate a room to them.

Thanks all, any advice you can offer is appreciated!

Also, I don't need to be slammed because I don't believe in crating. To each their own!

Update:

I know she is up to date on her shots, which is great!

Have your vet check her. Most vets spay 6mos and older. The peeing thing is a tossup. She could of been excited after be caged up. I don't like cages, glad she will be in a loving home. In a pack she should learn from the others.

I would have her spayed in the next 2 - 3 months before she comes into her heat. You seem to be experienced with dogs and I do not think you will have a problem socializing your group. She should be able to make the transition from crate to a real home very easy. Just give this dog lots of room for exercise, the border collie part of her makes her a working dog that needs to have a lot of activity and exercise.

I would confine her till she is checked out by your vet and given shots, wormed, etc. And schedule her to be spayed as soon as possible. She's due any time now to come into heat. While you don't believe in crate training, its wise to allow her to have a crate open where she feels its "safe and home" for her.

The peeing is more of a submissive thing.

Get her spayed when she is 6 months! If you look at all the animals in animal shelters , it's worth it! Most lab pups are active -especially girls ! - but when she gets to be about a year and a half , she should be good! If you can , obedience class! Its a great way for dog and owner to bond! But its sometimes just as easy to do it yourself. Train her asap , as she grows, she will grow into new habits, get those bad habits out!

    Hope I helped

Get her spayed now. As for peeing on the floor, its possible she wasn't housetrained. You say that she wasn't being treated well, so maybe they didnt' spend enough time with her to teach her house manners. Transitioning a dog to no kennel should be easy. Just give her a soft bed to sleep in, and she'll probably bed down with the other dogs. Good luck!

i can answer 2 of them first being "When do I get her spayed? " well i asked my dog breeder the same question and i was told @ the age of 6 months.

and 2nd im pretty sure you can un-train her to be crate trained but it will take a lot of time n effort, i have now just heard of "cratetrainingg" so ur not the only one:))

good luck, and have fun with ur new girl:))
