Last weekend I WON A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9 ribbons valued at .69 each. That is almost SEVEN DOLLARS!!!!

It only cost me over $100 in entry fees, $120 in gas to enter.

I will say that a good aquaintance of mine WON Eukanuba National Championship with her dog a few years ago and there is a $50,000 prize for the Best in Show.

HOWEVER that did not begin to touch what it had cost her over the years to campaign and advertise that dog.

Like Basset I have a LOT of crystal... as well as a bunch of tchotchkes won by various dogs over the years - I'm certain that when I die my kids will either toss most of it in the garbage or have a garage sale where everything is 50 cents.

I don't know how much is offered at Westminster - I'm sure it's a large amount but I have a better chance at being struck by lightning than winning that (partially because it's seriously HARD to get an entry in to it unless you are in the top 5 of the breed which would cost me WAYYY more money in entries and travel than I can afford and partially because I'm not "known", a pro handler, "on the circuit" or any of the other things that might help).

Even if I WON a huge amount -- the reality is I've spent more on dogs and dog shows than I can ever make up. Taxes would grab a third of it right off the top -- leaving me with 33.5K - just to TRAVEL to Westminster and stay at a hotel would cost me about 3 grand. Which leaves just over 30K to cover the thousands a year that I spend showing dogs ....

,,,, did I mention? -- heading to a dog show next weekend - travel costs should be around 2K - *IF* the dog wins I'll get a COOL big ribbon, some tchotchke that will someday be tossed in the garbage by my kids, a photograph and bragging rights - YAY! My Brat won that show twice - I'm really not even certain where the tchotchke is......

As far as the rant - my mother always said it makes little sense to argue with the delusional.

Edit: For those who don't know:

Eukanuba - By invitation only (other than this the anniversary year).

To be invited you must do one of these things:

Have a dog you finished entirely from the "Bred By" classes

Have a dog who won a BIS

Have a dog who is ranked in the Top 20 for bred (yes, I've done this but someone ELSE paid the travel expenses and the entries **AND** I had a job that allowed me to go to a LOT of shows).

The average person who shows does NOT get invited to Eukanuba.

Westminster does not even pay out cash prizes

Eukanuba is the ONLY one that has that big prize.. and like someone pointed out, you have to work your way up to even get INVITED to that show! Chances of winning the prize once you even get there? Consider there's well over 100 breeds represented at the show, and several dogs in each breed competing.. your odd of getting BIS to win that prize is less than 1%!

According to this story, Sadie, the Scottie who won the Eukanuba National Cham,pionship in Long Beach in December, got a $50,000 cash prize

You know what would be nice? BoB get their entry fee returned. Now that would be nice.

I haven't had a BiS yet. BiSS, but no BiS I have a dog who I put all of my hopes and dreams into, because he was going to be my Best in Show dog, and he was really backing it up with several BoBs, and never taking less than Best opp as a puppy (Once best opp over a special at a specialty show out of the puppy class!), but then I put him away to grow up, and he injured his knee (strained tendon, nothing tore or anything), so he looks a little funky in his movement in one leg from behind. His side movement is fine, but that one leg... Ugh. It's been improving, but I'm not holding my breath.

But I think whatever her name is now just does it to piss some of the people around here off. Surely she's not that stupid to believe that every single show gives that money out for BiS. Kennel clubs are poor as it is, how in the world would they afford something like that?

The article clearly says that the winner of Westminster gets a cup, and Eukanuba gives the cash.

I just think it's a little hypocritical of her.

Lets say she breeds every year.

13 is the average age of a chi. Lets say she breeds at about 18 months and stops when the dog's eleven. Well call that 10 years of breeding, because that's probably about right for your average BYB.

3 puppies in a litter.

10 x 3 = 30 puppies.

She sells her dogs for $500 each (pfft! idiots pay that much, too)

So in a lifetime she gets $15,000 from one chihuahua.

To my knowledge she has 3 byatches.

$45,000.

She also has a Golden Retriever / Poodle Mix.

So well add another $15,000.

I make that $60,000.

I think, to be quite honest, that says it all.

We have established that Eukaneuba give out a $50k prize, which is nigh on IMPOSSIBLE to obtain and you spend more than that breeding damn good quality dogs and being recognised as a great handler. Don't talk about things you don't understand - it makes you look like even more of an idiot. Go back to your ugly nasty pieces of junk and leave us all in peace. thanks.

I'd sure like to know, so I can enter my dogs.

The most I've ever won was around $25 in puppy sweeps. But I've got more friggin glassware than I can ever use (anybody want some crystal candlesticks?) And I like the pewter plates that the national Basset club gives out as trophies, I figure if I go enough years and win enough I'll eventually get a whole dinner set. And it will only have cost me $20,000.

The most money I know of for BIS is the anual Show Of Shows held by the Canadian Kennel Club and it is in Ottawa Ontario Canada. The prize for that is $10.000. It is invitational only.

The dog must have won a BIS from a sanctioned CKC dog show in that calendar year.. There is a panel of 6 judges. A very prestigious win .

A show around here last weekend gave a coffee maker to the BIS and I *think* to each group winner.

Now, if that coffee maker did laundry, vacuumed, and washed dishes... it *MIGHT* be worth $50,000.

I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

As I understand it, the Futurity class is pretty much the only realistic chance there is of making any money whatsoever.
