Dog has kennel cough!!!!?
Hi,
I adopted a dog from our local animal control shelter and when i got him home he was coughing. I took the little guy to the vet 2 days later and he has Kennel Cough. He gave him a shot and 3 different meds. This was 2 days ago and he is 90% better but, the vet said that the cough would just kind of hang around and it would take a few weeks to get rid of it completely.
I already saw 100 sites, i just want peoples experiences on this one please.
I would be grateful if i could get some people that have had dogs with this cough and what, how did they do for the animal.
Thanks in advance.
P.S
he's only 11 pounds a mix chiwawa and terrier , he sleeps alot too. I guess that could be from his surgery ( nuetred )??
He hasn't had his stitches out yet.
Otherwise when he is up he's really full of pep!! eats well and all that.

I was in this very same situation this past November with my dog! I adopted a little Shiba Inu mix from a woman who ran a foster/rescue and had about 15 dogs running around her home. The second day I had him, he began coughing, which progressed by the hour, so the next day I took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with kennel cough. The vet gave him a 10 day dose of Clavamox (2 pills a day for 10 days). The vet said that this should take care of it, if not call back, etc etc......Well after about 7 days of administering the clavamox, my dog was STILL coughing! ...not nearly to the extent of what he was the first couple of days, but it was definitely lingering. I was getting frustrated, so I called my vet just to be sure, and they said to finish his treatment as planned, then wait to see after about a week or after his last pill as long as it wasn't getting worse. So at the 10th (last) day of his clavamox pill, he was still slightly coughing, but after about 7-8 days post treatment, he was back to normal! So my experience was that kennel cough DEFINITELY lingers! Don't worry, especially since your dog is 90% better.....the only time you have to worry is if his cough gets obviously worse.

Kennel Cough in dogs will stimulate a coarse, dry, hacking cough about three to seven days after the dog is initially infected. It sounds as if the dog needs to "clear it's throat" and the cough will be triggered by any extra activity or exercise. Many dogs that acquire Kennel Cough will cough every few minutes, all day long. Their general state of health and alertness will be unaffected, they usually have no rise in temperature, and do not lose their appetite. The signs of Canine Cough usually will last from 7 to 21 days and can be very annoying for the dog and the dog's owners. Life threatening cases of Kennel Cough are extremely rare and a vast majority of dogs that acquire the infection will recover on their own with no medication. Cough suppressants and occasionally antibiotics are the usual treatment selections

Kennel cough sounds scary to a new dog owner, but all it is is a cold for dogs. If he's already received the bordatella vaccine (which protects against the severe and potentially fatal strains) and has been prescribed medication, then all you can do is wait. Your dog isn't in any sort of unbearable pain, he might just feel a bit under the weather.
Keep him warm, clean up any gunk around his eyes, and make sure you change your clothes and wash your hands before going around or in the home of another dog (especially puppies and seniors). Bordatella is extremely contagious, as it is airborne, and can hang around in the air of an area for about 5 hours.
Your concern is admirable. If you have any worries, don't hesitate to call your vet- better safe than sorry. He'll be fine, though. (:

My two dogs have recently recovered from Kennel Cough, it's not too big of an issue it's very common. Since they had their shots it was a very minor case and they got over it after three days of taking medicine. They still have a few coughs every now and then but it's no biggie.
Also avoid giving them too much exercise exhausting them can induce coughing.

Your puppy will be fine. It's very common for animals who are kept in a kennel environment, such as a shelter, to have kennel cough.
As you know, it's a virus. Most of the time, you don't have to treat the dog, and the virus passes. It's a good idea to give pups, older or weaker dogs treatment, just in case.
My dog had kennel cough once... she was fine in about 10 days.

I fostered 3 9-week old puppies with kennel cough for about a week. They had a treatment of amoxicillin twice a day for about 10 days. I didn't do anything special for them, and they were fine after the treatment. Just give him time; he will get better.

Hi! Hope this helps.
Infectious Tracheobronchitis, commonly known as kennel cough, is a bronchitis illness characterized by a harsh, hacking cough. Most people say the cough sounds as though their dog has something stuck in his throat.

Never take a dog with kennel cough or coughing. Distemper , Parvo have very similar symptoms! Shots do NOT always work. The cough from Kennel Cough May stay a while or may never leave I have seen both. I have also seen upper repertory Problems be misdiagnosed !
Sadly I say Never Never get a dog from an Animal Shelter , they use the money to support countries that are hostile to America or political parties who allows legislation which weakens America !

I did what you're doing. I got 2 dogs to foster. The cough lingered for about two weeks, but did go away. None of my other 3 dogs got sick, fortunately, but it's important to keep your dog away from other dogs - no dog park, no beach, no doggy sleep overs.

What your vet did is just what they do for kennel cough. It is actually very common.
