Any weird/unique/interesting things to do in El Paso, Texas?

My boyfriend is going to be living there over the next year and I wanted to find something really cool to take him to when I go to see him the next time. However, all I've been able to find is touristy stuff. So I'm wondering if there's anyone who lives there or has lived there that can make some recommendations?

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in far West Texas on U.S. Highway 62/180. The driving distance is 110 miles east of El Paso, Texas

Over 80 miles of hiking trails offer easy nature walks through desert flora; more moderate hikes follow canyons and reach riparian oases, and strenuous all day hikes can take you into high country forest or to the "Top of Texas".

As you can see from the answer from the first poster, there isn't much to do in El Paso TX. The population here is about 80% Hispanic so it's a good place to explore Mexican food and culture. Just take note when you're here you should NOT cross over to the Mexican side Ciudad Juarez where a lot of gang violence is happening on a daily basis.

For R&R people living in El Paso would consider visiting the following places in nearby New Mexico: vineyards in Deming or Las Cruces, ski resort and casino in Ruidoso, or Albuquerque to visit the zoo, museums and ride balloons during fall season.

gosh where is the touristy stuff you speak of? you mean the visitor's center downtown? el paso is unique. best off-the-beaten path stuff you can do is ride sun metro -- smart, ecological, ecological, green and WILL BE the thing to do in the course of the next 20 years. most people are simply too stupid to realize the obvious, right now.
