grammar question -- "way" or "ways" or neither?

Is it proper to say "a little ways to go" or "a little way to go" to indicate the need for some more time or distance, or is neither correct?

    a little WAY to go - singular.

    .

    Some people do say "a long ways to go" etc. but it is not grammatically correct.

    It's better when you say, "a little ways to go"

    i think "a little way to go" sounds better

    plural does not work in this context.
