Question about mixing Parakeets?

We have two parakeets, one young male and one older female (who is also the boss of the cage). We want to get another and not sure if it should be male or female. The cage is 12x12x24 which we think is not too small for three birds. Any advice?

Your cage is too small for three birds. Minimum for two would be 24 by 18 by 18 and the widest part being horizontal so they can fly across the cage. A taller cage is designed for finches and canaries.

First get a bigger cage.............36 wide by 36 high by 24 deep approximately.

Then if you are adding another budgie make it another female.
