Think You REALLY Know 'Right' from 'Left'?

When "Mr. Conservative" Barry Goldwater(R) ran for president in 1964, he was considered by many to be a dinosaur and "too far right". Today, Goldwater couldn't pass muster for RNC funding of a campaign because his views of small government place his position "too far left" for today's GOP.

What's your opinion and explanation for this 'shift' within the GOP?

Update:

HINT: Goldwater's view of 'small government' was a decentralized government that stayed out of people's private lives. Consequently, he supported a woman's right of choice, gays' right to serve openly in the military and true 'Separation of Church and State'. How ironic is that?!?

Update 2:

Mary Dent Crisp... Mary Dent Crisp, a 'Goldwater Republican', was driven from the leadership of the Republican Party in 1980 after publicly assailing its opposition to abortion rights and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Update 3:

LOL... insulting me may feel good, but it's not a debate point nor an argument that holds much water in relation to the question ;)

It sounds like a libertarian to me -- there would probably be more of them if weren't for Reagan -- also Rush and Fox news have a huge say in what is required to be a republican

progressives go back to FDR so I don't know what you are talking about dude

The religious "right" and the neo-conservatives -liberals that were smacked by reality according to their admission- began slowly taking over the party after the civil rights movement, Roe v. Wade, and the Vietnam war. The war hawks left the Democratic party because of pacifists in the party, and southerners and the ultra religious left the Democratic party because of Roe v. Wade and the civil rights movement, amongst other variables.

Goldwater was the man! Exactly what we need these days, and if the GOP wants to survive, they'll take on his views.

Small government is the antithesis of the far left. So, anyone that thinks that is very confused about the left-right paradigm.

I'm an old Goldwater fan. You are still thinking right and left. At least add up and down and consider the necessity of a three space representation. I put Goldwater straight up from the current political parties and near to Ron Paul.

Hailed by the "Greatest Republican President since Ike" (Duh! when compared to Nixon and the Bush's)

Reagan declared Barry Goldwater as "Mr. Conservative" (and Reagan Doubled the National debt.)

The Republicans are the Party of the Right Wing. That's almost as far Right from Goldwater (who was centered with right leanings) as it is to the Left.

Freedom of the People was Goldwater

Freedom of the Company while restricting the rights of the People is the modern Republican party.

I think I know my left from right pretty well. That is why I vote for Republicans on a local level, but I elect Democrats on a statewide and national level. The problem with the Republicans these days is that too many are radical and out of touch with reality.

-as some say politics are circular some times you will see folks called lefties and Rights agree on the same thing except from different angles .I've never heard a good Definition of left or right except for the Libertarian party's world's smalled political quiz which states left equals government economic control and right equals social control and straight tyranny is down.

More importantly, how were the Progressives able to worm their way into the Democratic party like a viral parasite to the point where they are about to destroy a party that was once respectable? Do you think YOU really know right from left?

I don't think you know your right from your left. Far left is considered big government.
