  • According to "kitty etiquette", is this rude?

I just caught Poppy (10 month old tortie) dipping her paw in my glass of orange/pineapple juice. It must have tasted good because she 'dipped & licked' again! Is she being rude? Or am I being "overly sensitive"?

  • Think You REALLY Know 'Right' from 'Left'?

When "Mr. Conservative" Barry Goldwater(R) ran for president in 1964, he was considered by many to be a dinosaur and "too far right". Today, Goldwater couldn't pass muster for RNC funding of a campaign because his views of small government place his position "too far left" for today's GOP.

  • Howard Zinn has died?

Howard Zinn, one of the country’s most celebrated historians, died of a heart attack Wednesday in Santa Monica, California. He was 87.

His classic work, A People’s History of the United States, changed the way we look at history in America. First published a quarter of a century ago, the book has sold over a million copies and continues to sell more copies each successive year.

    http://www.democracynow.org/tags/howard_zinn

Published in 1980 with little promotion and a first printing of 5,000, "A People's History" was — fittingly — a people's best-seller, attracting a wide audience through word of mouth and reaching 1 million sales in 2003. Although Zinn was writing for a general readership, his book was taught in high schools and colleges throughout the country, and numerous companion editions were published, including "Voices of a People's History," a volume for young people and a graphic novel

"I can't think of anyone who had such a powerful and benign influence," said the linguist and fellow activist Noam Chomsky, a close friend of Zinn's. "His historical work changed the way millions of people saw the past."

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wir...

In 1977, I got my first taste of history told from a perspective that made me think and question... thanks to "The Post-War Years" by Howard Zinn.

Thank you Howard Zinn for being a voice of, and for, the people!!

  • Have you heard about this Cat Food Recall?

FDA Alerts Pet Owners to Voluntary Recall of Premium Edge Cat Food

    October 20, 2009

    http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVM...

FDA is providing the following information from Premium Edge Pet Foods to alert pet owners of a voluntary recall of certain cat foods manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods for Premium Edge. The affected brands were found to contain an inadequate level of thiamine, which may cause clinical signs of thiamine deficiency in cats eating this food. FDA is working on this situation and will provide additional information as it becomes available. If your veterinarian diagnoses that your cat has become ill from consuming the affected pet food, please ask your veterinarian to file a report with FDA.

Diamond Pet Foods has issued a voluntary recall on the following date codes of Premium Edge Finicky Adult cat food and Premium Edge Hairball cat food: RAF0501A22X 18 lb., RAF0501A2X 6 lb., RAH0501A22X 18 lb., RAH0501A2X 6 lb. The date of manufacture is May 28, 2009. All retail outlets shipped the above lots were contacted, asking them to pull the product from the store shelves. The retailers were also asked to contact their customers via email or telephone requesting them to check the date code of the food. However, if you or anyone you know has these date codes of Premium Edge cat food, please return them to your retailer.

The company tested the product and found no contaminants in the cat food; however the cat foods were deficient in thiamine. Diamond tracked the vitamin premix lot number that was utilized in these particular cat foods and have performed testing on another lot of Premium Edge cat food that used the same vitamin premix, and it was not deficient in thiamine. No other neurological signs have been reported on any other product manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods.

To contact Premium Edge Pet Foods, please call 800-977-8797 between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm central time, Monday through Friday.

  • What's the "Funniest First" You've Experienced with Cat/Kitten?

Underfoot (21 mos.) jumped about two feet the first time she felt warm air from the heater vent on her belly. Then she crept back very slowly and low to the floor, and stuck her paw out to check out the warm air.

Poppy (6 mos.) has stared down intently into the vents, but felt the warm air the first time this morning. She circled the vent, back arched and tail puffed up, then "attacked it" by smacking it with her paws. (The vent survived, but has apparently been beaten into submission now!)

  • Any Advice or First-Hand Experience with Feline Oral Cancer?

    Hello,

My 15 year old, Miss Peabody has been diagnosed with oral cancer. I got the results back from her biopsy (7/16/09) as Adenocarcinoma and have been doing a lot of internet (and soul) searching to try to figure out where we go from here and what I can do that's best for her well-being and quality of life. Over the past three months, we've been on a roller coaster ride of sinus infection, tooth extraction, maybe cancer, not cancer, another tooth extraction, swollen gums from sutures, then cancer diagnosis by sight there's no more to do. I took her to a different vet for a second opinion and like that this vet is researching the pathology results, considering (laser) surgical options and is overall more interested in her case, rather than just immediately giving up and giving over to a "Hospice only until Euthanasia" protocol.

So far, Miss Peabody is eating well... she woke me up (abruptly and noisily!) at 5am yesterday because her canned food dish was empty and she wanted it filled IMMEDIATELY! She seems fairly content, affectionate and is purring. I'm just not ready now to give up, but I want to make sure I'm not just being selfish concerning her comfort and quality of life.

    Any Advice?? Thanks!!

  • Cyber Attacks as an International Issue... What's Your Opinion?

The US and Russia agree that cyberspace is an emerging battleground. The two sides are expected to address the subject when President Obama visits Russia next week and at the General Assembly of the United Nations in November.

However, the US and Russia ideas differ in HOW to address the problem.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/28/world/28cyber.ht...

RUSSIA favors an international treaty along the lines of those negotiated for chemical weapons and has pushed for that approach at a series of meetings this year and in public statements by a high-ranking official.

U.S. argues that a treaty is unnecessary. It instead advocates improved cooperation among international law enforcement groups. If these groups cooperate to make cyberspace more secure against criminal intrusions, their work will also make cyberspace more secure against military campaigns.

Which approach do you favor? Or do you have different ideas on the best way to handle the problem. Relevant links are always appreciated!

    Thanks for your opinions!

  • What Is Your Opinion of Glenn Beck Playing in the "Valley of the Dolls"?

Last night I tuned to that O'Reilly fellow's show and Glenn Beck was the guest. He was talking about ACORN... and he had props! Also, neither confronts the role of the FCC in allowing media outlets to be 'gobbled up' by a small number of corporate conglomerates... the ultimate "filter". What do you think? Please feel free to provide links that back your opinion :)

(Those who know me know I love links!! :)

    Straight story....

Yesterday, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) launched the Media Fairness Caucus, made up of about a dozen House Republicans, aiming “to fight liberal media bias.” No Democrats have signed on yest, but Rep. Smith says he welcomes all to join the caucus.

    "Left Spin":

Smith must be concerned about a media system that hosts Liz Cheney a dozen times in ten days, or invites twice as many Republicans on as Democrats to discuss the stimulus package, or consistently favors conservative commentators and politicians on the Sunday political talk shows. Not to mention an entire cable network that blatantly cheer-leads for the far right."

  • Should I Fight The "Violation"?

Question: Why is the Right accused of trying to control a

woman's body when we really only care what you do to the child?

    Deleted Answer:

Your argument is still a thinly veiled 'justification' for interfering into another person's rights and their decisions, as well as imposing your own definition of when life begins. Bottom line... True support of personal responsibility means accepting other people's right to make choices that differ from the choices you might make for yourself.

  • Anyone With Hemorrhoids? Would this Hurt?

... Is there a <retroactive> memo that covers hemorrhoids? Use of pepper spray?

"A Tunisian national who was jailed at CIA secret prisons in Afghanistan as well as at Guantanamo Bay has filed a lawsuit accusing the US of torture. The suit by Rafiq Alhami (rah-FEEK' al-HAH'-mee) is believed to be the first alleging torture well before the Justice Department issued a secret memo authorizing waterboarding and other methods in August 2002. Alhami was arrested in November 2001 and says his torture began one month later. He was allegedly stripped naked, threatened with dogs, shackled in painful positions for hours and beaten. Alhami also says interrogators sprayed pepper spray on his hemorrhoids, causing harsh pain."

In early 2003, during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, there was similar buzz over a mural at the United Nations that was also draped. The spin was that the mural had been censored by the White House, Bush Administration, Colin Powell, UN officials (pick one or all the above). Most likely a large, blue curtain merely photographed easier and was was thus a more appropriate backdrop for the cameras. The mural was a reproduction of a famous portrait by Pablo Picasso, depicting horrified faces and titled "Guernica" (link to .jpg image file below), named after a Basque town of the same name.
