What is the next number in the series and why?

Fill in the missing number: 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32, __

Apparently the answer is 48 according to what my son's teacher wrote on the paper, but I cannot figure out why to be able to help him.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Update:

The question is correct. I agree that I thought it was a typo in the question. If there is no 6 in the series then the next number would be 64. However, with the 6, I myself cannot figure out the pattern. I just wanted confirmation that my math is not totally out of whack after so many years.

    ye i have to agree, i think the teacher must of made a typo. are you 100% that's the sequence? and to the above answer it is definitely not 64

    I think theres a mistake i've been trying for a bit to work it out, it could be 64 but have no idea how it could be 48 sorry

    There seems to be no obvious pattern here. Maybe the teacher made a typo?
