What's up with the Left hand?

In those countries where they use the left hand for... um .. personal hygeine, it is forbidden to offer the left hand in a handshake, also to transfer money with it, and many more taboo's ... because that hand is considered "unclean." (even though it may have been washed and/or more sanitary than the right).

My question is: What CAN you do with the left that doesn't cross-contaminate the right? The steering wheel of a car undoubtedly touches both hands, same for a computer keyboard. Aren't both hands now the same amount of "unclean?" When one prepares food in these countries can he/she use the left hand? What about building things using the left hand?

There's quite a difference between actual sanitary cleanliness and ritual cleanliness. Some of those customs arose because there was little water available for washing in a desert climate.

The best thing to do would be to carefully research those customs, so you'll know what is proper.

In Japan we ran into similar detailed customs regarding wearing street shoes, house slippers, bath clogs, and special green shoes worn only in toilet rooms. It was OK to wear my street shoes in hard-floored areas in shops and offices, but I had to take them off to walk on carpeted areas, for example.

I think it's just for eating and shaking hands, nothing else.
