Could Japan's manga magazine system work for American comics?
Magazines like Weekly Shonen Jump, Ribon, and Big Comic serialize perhaps one or two dozen self-contained comics in one periodical, printed in black and white on cheap newsprint, covering a wide range of demographics and genres. Could this business model work on a large scale in the United States? DC and Marvel normally sell titles in individual pamphlets, but the magazine format could theoretically help publicize new series and have them support each other. Could it succeed in America, using American-created comics?

I have to say no and point to 2000 A. D. from Britain and the French Bandes Desinees magazines (the old Pilote, Tintin and Spirou) as examples of why not. These magazines have had similar formats since the end of WWII and have not only produced beloved characters like Judge Dredd, Tintin and Asterix but many artists who have done jobs for American Publishers. And the closest we have is Heavy Metal.
The truth is the American Industry will fight anything tooth and nail and it REALLY wants to focus its sales on a very few characters who generate high volume because that means more returns than many diverse characters who collectively generate greater volume. If you were to make a respectable effort -- even in an Uber-fanzine -- they would try to hire you and put you to work on the strategy which maximizes profit and minimizes expenses for most of the shareholders.
