Is renter's insurance worth it?
Yahoo, I am renting a house with one roommate and we have to pay $250 for our renter's insurance. I think it is a waste of money but my roommate is all about getting it. Who is right?

Yes, renters insurance is worth it.
Acermill is correct. A renters policy provides liability coverage. So, if you cause a grease fire and damage the building or your dog bites someone, you are protected.
As far as protecting your property goes, renters can really pay off. I had a pipe burst in the ceiling of my apartment. My renters insurance paid out $10,000 to move all of my property out of the apartment, clean it, dry it, inventory the damaged items and bring my property back into the new unit. I consider the premium I paid for my renters coverage to be money well spent.

Whether you hate insurance (cough-stupid Republicans) or love it, renters insurance is one of the least expensive and most valuable insurances you can purchase. Why ? Because it is not just YOUR possessions which are covered. If either you or your roommate should accidentally start a fire which causes a $50,000 loss to your landlord, of course his insurer will reimburse his loss. THEN his insurer is going to come after YOU with a vengeance, looking to recover that $50,000. You want to risk a $50,000 millstone around your neck for a lousy $250 a year ? Think about it.

Some people love insurance (cough democrats), some people hate insurance.
My stuff was never worth more than $500.
If they wanted my mattress they could take it.
Do you have a lot of valuables around?
Then I would consider the insurance.
Perhaps you could get another quote from a place.
Try Geico.com - I've found them to be the cheapest in everything.
He might have told them that the stuff was worth 1 million.
Who knows what he did - that premium you're paying is too high.
