Question about 4x4 on 2001 dodge 2500?

Sometimes when the 4x4 is engaged it will pop out or disengage somehow. Getting really annoying and unreliable. Is there a way to adjust this so it engages. Does same thing in 4x4 low. Last time it did it I push and pulled on the leaver to make sure it was all the way engaged and then all of a sudden it decided to work. I thing it is just out of adjustment but then what do I know. Any ideas on what could be the problem. It has the cummins motor in it if it help.

Go to the actuator on the front axle, jack up the right front so you don`t lose to much fluid. Remove the actuator and slide the collar to the right and check that the splines on the inner axle are not twisted. That will unlock your front diff under load and with low vacuum. I had to weld mine together . Not worth the time and money to fix. Depending on mileage and amount of use, it may just need to have the lever linkage lubricated. The shift linkage is totally exposed on the side of the trans so it rusts up good. The front diff is controled by a vacuum line from the transfer case. Easy to see 2 plastic lines , red and black. Hope it`s just rusty linkage

CHECK YOUR CROSS MEMBER WHERE YOUR TRANSMISSION SITS.DODGE IS REAL BAD ABOUT BRAKING THE WELDS THERE AND IT WILL CAUSE IT TO POP OUT OF GEAR OR DISENGAGE YOUR 4X4.ALSO IF YOUR TRUCK HAS BEEN LIFTED MAKE SURE THE SHIFTER IS NOT HITTING THE FLOOR.
