What causes the oil pressure light to come on only when idling in gear on 99 Taurus?

Once the accelerator is pressed, the light goes out. If the car is shifted to park, the light goes out. The temperature gauge also rises until the car starts moving again. This mainly happens at red lights when the car is stopped in gear and idling. Thank you for any information you can provide.

My approach to oil pressure warning lights is to blindly change the oil pressure sender. It is the culprit most of the time (especially in a car that new), it is cheap and the labor is about the same as connecting a gauge to measure the pressure. If the symptoms go away, life is good! If not, investigation gets serious.

In any case, you should not drive the car - especially on the freeway - until this is resolved.

The temperature rise is unrelated. The top suspects are the radiator fan not running (bad fan or bad control) or a bubble in the coolant.

Either the switch to activate the light has lost its calibration and is turning it on or your oil pump is beginning to loose pressure. The reason it does it only in gear when idling is that the extra drag of having the transmission in gear lowers your engine rpm slightly which slows down your oil pump speed lowering its pressure.

when's the last time you changed the oil? Oil viscosity is lowering causing light to come on.

Run a sludge cleaner first then change oil
