saddle seat size for 13.2 welsh pony?
what saddle size is usual for a 13.2 young pony? i have a 16.5" but im thinking thats too long as i use it on my small TB, would a 16" be right or am i looking at a 15" seat?
im not asking about width, as im getting a gullet change saddle as hes being broken this summer
OHH to add i cant try a saddle on as yet as hes semi ferral at the moment, i am trying to get all my kit ready for when he starts ridden work eventually, to spread the cost
oh. am i not right in thinking that a saddle shound not be longer than the last two rib bones?? because that is what i have been led to believe.
surly a saddle 16.5" or more is going to be sitting either on the last rib or the loins?? and i thought that was a bad thing?
i thought the seat size also reflects the Length of a saddle no?? correct me or explain if im wrong because thats what i thought lol
Thanks Faye and the next one down, im not as dumb as i thought then haha.
im paranoid about saddle fit as id hate for my horses to be uncomfortable, especially with his first experiences.
i will probably go and try out a 15-16 before i decide on make etc, tho i do fit a 15 its not the most secure feeling in the world lol

Ignore the idiots above. Seat size does depend largely on what the horse can take.
If a saddle is too long then it will put pressure on the weakest part of the horses back, directly over the kidneys. I've seen horses with bruised kidneys, it is not nice, they pee blood and if you even run your hand down thier back they practically collapse.
The saddle should NEVER go beyong the last rib. Idealy you want a saddle that you can sit in comfortably and that fits the horse. Provided it doesnt go beyond the last rib then you can have smaller saddles to suit you.
as for the pony, hazarding a guess you might get a 16" on him. My 13.2hh pony s long in the back and takes a 16.5" at the max, however I have a 16" on him. If he is short in the back you will be looking at a 15 or 15.5"
If you con touch him you can get a rough guess but I wouldnt worry, If he is semi ferral then it is going to be a while before you can get a saddle on him.

The seat size doesn't change how it fits the horse. If you fit in a 16.5, thats what you need to use. The tree size is the only thing that matters, but if you're getting a gullet change that shouldn't be a problem (although I personally will never get a gullet change saddle, they seem cheap and faulty).

Seat size has absolutely nothing to do with the horse. The size of the seat depends on YOU. If a 16.5" fits you, then use that.
