How can I motivate myself?

University student, halfway through 2nd year, no motivation, no will to get any work done, unable to focus or concentrate, to the point where I feel almost a few IQ points lower than I used to. Feel burned out. Sleeping badly. What can I do to get myself back on track?

I don't buy all this 'goal setting', 'positive thinking' talk. What motivated me to get off my backside and make things happens was NOT about moving towards something I want but moving AWAY from what I didn't want. It's not that different - just the other side of the coin.

I have worked for morons and wanted the qualifications to get a job so I didn't have to work for morons again. I have been poor and didn't like it so I wanted qualifications and work that would mean I was not poor any more. I have lived in crappy flats with noisy, antisocial neighbours and wanted the option to live somewhere better. I started life in a very poor family in a council house at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder. I wanted to be free of the shame and deprivation. No one else could do it for me so I had to get off my @rse and make it happen.

Education has the ability to set you up for life. You just have to grasp the opportunity - ideally while you are young enough to absorb the information readily. It gets harder. You have choices. Are you and your future worth the investment of a couple of years of tough graft? Maybe you don't appreciate what you'd be avoiding by making a success of your life so cannot be motivated the way I was. I can't put that kind of experience in your head and wouldn't want to but I honestly believe you will not regret getting stuck in and squeezing all the knowledge you can out of your tutors while you have the opportunity. You will regret it if you let this opportunity slip away. Hang in there. I reckon you are probably worth it.

In order to stay focused and poised to succeed in school you must also find time for yourself too. Go to the gym and get a good workout in, or hang out with some buddies and slam back a couple brews and have some laughs.. Also, working out can make you sleep better at night.

Set goals. Find out exactly what you want, write it down, and recite it to yourself everyday. Not having goals is similar to driving somewhere without a map. If you don't know what you want how do you get motivated ? good luck

Me too. I've been treating every day like it's a new day and going in with a positive attitude. As corny as that sounds, it really works.
