Folio society? What do you think?

I got this offer in the mail to join the "Folio Society" which is apparently a company that publishes really nice editions of books. If I join, I can get the entire "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" for about 20 bucks. The thing is, I'd have to buy 4 more books to fulfill my membership requirements, and on their website, the cheapest books i saw were about $40.

I'm a sucker for these kinds of offers, but I don't know if it's worth it.

Have any of you done business with the Folio Society before, and can you tell me if their books are worth the price?

I actually just received a similar offer in the mail the other day, only it was for the complete Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit series. I too am tempted by the offer. I did some research on the company and they're legitimate in every sense. Their books really are top quality, printed in small shops in Europe. They offer some interesting titles as well. I called customer service to inquire about certain out of stock books and their service team is based out of the UK, which I find refreshing.

The books are expensive, but if you look on sites such as Abebooks, they seem to keep their resale value if kept in good condition.

I would say go for it, especially if you have a fondness for unique or ornate bindings. If cost really is an issue and this is just an impulse, hold off. I'm likely going to accept the offer in a couple of weeks once I think about it for awhile to avoid making an impulse purchase.
