I seen people talking about vision. But what does the 20/? mean anyways ?

I have never understood and have never ask until now. Please explain in?

    20/20 the first 20 stands for how many feet away you are from whatever you are reading. the second 20 stands for how many feet away a person with perfect eyesight would stand.

    The first number indicates how far away the patient is away from the chart or if its the new binocular type device, it represents the same thing as standing 20 feet away. The second number indicates how far away a person with "normal" vision could stand from the chart and still read the same row of letters. I just had an eye exam from MEPS recently and i was wandering the same thing.
