The opening to Kill Bill. It has a terrific opening scene of The Bride on the ground beat up, and a man wipes the blood off her face with a napkin, on the napkin says "Bill" They talk for a while (signature Tarantino dialogue) and then he puts a bullet in her head and it cuts to the terrific opening credit sequence with the great and ironic song "Bang, Bang, my baby shot me down"

I easily agree that Saving Private Ryan had one of the best opening scenes. Ever.
Some others that come to mind are the first and third films in the Indiana Jones franchise: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Apocalypse Now, Easy Rider and Se7en.

Star Wars (before it was "A New Hope")
I remembered seeing the imperial cruiser pass over the screen for 2 minutes...it was really a few seconds.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Waiting all those years then seeing THREE Klingon battle cruisers! WOW
Saving Private Ryan - felt awe, fear, nausea at what I was seeing.

My favorite openings to a movie are Super Troopers with the teens in the car on their way to Canada and the opening to Swordfish.

The opening to Memento was cool, but it definitely didn't "blow me away." I don't think I've ever seen an opening I was particularly impressed with. Not one I can recall, anyway. I guess endings stick with me more.
