How accurate is the 20 week ultrasound at determining baby's sex?

This is our second baby and we want to find out the sex at the 20 week scan (we didint with the first)

However, someone has turned around to me (a guy at work actually) and said "What's the point, its not even that accurate. You hear all the time about people being told they are having one sex and then actually having another".

My thought is well if thats the case, why are you even given the option? The hospital where I am having my scan WILL tell you the sex - if they can see.

I just wondered if its as common as he was making out - do sonographers really get it wrong that often????

Update:

Thanks for all the advice. We have decided to still ask (my husband had told me to ignore what this guy had said anyway!).

I had asked friends and family what their views were. Two of them had heard stories of it being wrong (interestingly though, it was normally a friend of a friend rather than someone they knew well) but both had said it was "years ago". The advice I have had is ultrasounds are a lot better nowadays and although nothing is 100%, the sonographer wont tell us unless they are sure.

Thanks!

I found out that I was having a girl at 18 weeks and the doctor was 99% sure. I went back for another scan at 22 weeks and it was confirmed that I am having a girl.

If the sonographer isnt pretty sure, they shouldnt tell you. I dont know anyone who was told the wrong gender...so dont listen to that guy. Especially if the baby is a boy, there is no mistaking that! Sometimes they wont tell you at 20 weeks if they cant get a clear shot in between the legs, but most people I know find out at their 20 week scan.

They have been known to get the sex of the baby wrong before. The ultra sound tech will even tell you that the scan is not "100% accurate", but they've been trained to spot out those details on the scan and do this for a living. I've had a couple people tell me they were told one sex and then it turned out to be another. Overall about 90-95% of the pregnant people I know have been told the accurate sex.

No at 20 weeks you should deff be able to tell some people find out before but it also depends on the way baby is positioned, assuming baby lets you see what he or she is you should be able to tell and it be accurate bc the vagina/penis should be well developed at 20 weeks it starts developing around week 13, not that you could tell then but 20 weeks is common for people to find out the sex of the baby. So all that taken in if babys positioned right and dr or u\s tech is well trained you should have an accurate answer. Furthermore I have never known anyone to have the sex of their baby turn out differently then what they have been told...maybe 20 years ago. Good luck

In my opinion, it's extremely accurate, given you have a tech that actually knows what they're looking for. Boys tend to look like there's a turtle between their legs while girls have 3 distinct lines between their legs. I have had 3 babies. All my ultrasounds were right around 20 weeks (I think earliest for 19 weeks and a few days and the latest was 22 weeks). All of my ultrasounds were correct, although with my second they couldn't get a clear image and I had to go back a week or so later.

Ultrasounds are off when determining the weight of a baby in utero though. They are known to be off as much as 2 pounds in either direction, so don't rely on them for knowing the size of your baby.

At 20 weeks there's about a 5% error margin, and nearly all these occur when women who are carrying boys are told they're having a girl. At 20 weeks it's very accurate, and if you're told boy there's a 99% chance it is a boy.

Of course it's never 100%, and yes you do hear stories of "I was told so and so and got the other" but they are the excpetion- I don't know anyone whose scan was wrong!

well i think that its like 85% accurate if its a boy and like 70-75% if its a girl. Because sometimes the little fellows are good at hiding their parts. With my first pregnancy I was told I was having a girl, and I did. This time im having a boy, and trust me he was bearing all. I could see it before the ultrasound tech even got the words out it was a boy. But with my sister they were right everytime with her as well. But there is a possiblitly they could be wrong. So, its good to have two different names picked out anyhow. And ultrasound technology is a lot better than what it used to be.

    mine were right

if the lady/man giving u the scan show u 3 lines it def a girl. and with a boy well if the leg are spread you will be able to see. they never give u a 100% boy or girl and can only tell you want they can see. a lot of people who say they got the sex wrong are wrong themselves because the lady/man will always say they are never 100% on the sex

I had all three of mine at 20 weeks and all three were right. Depends on how the baby is positioned. Mistakes can happen but it isn't the end of the world if the ultrasound tech reads it wrong. You are still bringing home your baby and that's all that matters.

20 weeks is a good time to find out if the baby cooperates...most U/S techs won't venture a guess if they're not really sure. I tried at 18 weeks, 22 weeks and 37 weeks and my baby wouldn't cooperate...so there's no telling whether or not you will find out :)

That may be a bit of an exaggeration on his part, I have never met anyone that got the wrong sex. Now of course it can happen but I would say it's pretty rare.
