One contention is that Jacob was Joseph's father. Mary's father was Heli; she was descended from David, and it was actually her lineage that was referenced in Luke 3:23. It's taken for granted that, when Luke referred to Joseph as the son of Heli, he did so with the belief that the readers of that day would realize that Heli was Joseph's father in-law.
The Bible that we know tend to cross-reference a lot of people, and place them in different contexts than what we know of today. But that's one thing that's always survived ... husbands referring to their spouses' parents as their own parents, and vice versa.
After mulling over it, however, and looking over the lineages, I tend to believe that Heli was Joseph's father, and either Jacob was Mary's father (making him Joseph's father in-law) ... or Jacob was one of Joseph's forefathers. The lineages in three different Books of the Bible are off when compared to each other. Just as when we try to trace our own ancestry, some people get skipped. All three books begin with David. I think that Joseph was descended from Solomon through his father David. I'm not sure at what point it all jumped, or what went awry, but it's obvious that some records were lost. When God promised David that the Messiah would be the descendants of his son Solomon, he already foresaw that Mary, who was not a descendant of Solomon, would be chosen to bear the child. Mary was descended from Nathan, another one of David's sons. That made her a descendant of David, just like Joseph was ... but not a descendant of Solomon. Why Mary was chosen, I'm not 100% sure, but it's obvious that she was probably one of the most virtuous girls at the time. I'm thinking it also had something to do with her being a female; the lineage was usually chosen through the male of the family.
God's intention to keep His promise to David was evident, considering that he made sure that Solomon's descendant Joseph took to wife the woman who was carrying the Messiah.

1. Mary the mother of Jesus. She was the daughter of Heli, though the genealogy given by Luke lists Mary’s husband Joseph as the “son of Heli.” Says M’Clintock and Strong’s Cyclopaedia (1881, Vol. III, p. 774): “In constructing their genealogical tables, it is well known that the Jews reckoned wholly by males, rejecting, where the blood of the grandfather passed to the grandson through a daughter, the name of the daughter herself, and counting that daughter’s husband for the son of the maternal grandfather (Numb. xxvi, 33; xxvii, 4-7).” It is undoubtedly for this reason the historian Luke says that Joseph was the “son of Heli.”—Lu 3:23.

Dear Candice; As the Lord has no heavenly mother, He also does not earthly father. He is the Son of God.
All the genealogies you read are either of Joseph or of Mary
Matthew took the ancestors of Joseph to bring them to Abraham who's seed will bless all the nations of the earth. and he applied them to Jesus
Luke took the ancestors of Mary up to Adam and Eve who's seed will break the head of the serpent. and applied them to Jesus. Both of them are OK
So Heli is the father of Virgin Mary. Jacob is the father of Joseph.
It was accepted at that time to be written as you read it now.

Joseph was Mary's fiance when she got impregnated with Jesus. Joseph acted as Jesus's human father and raised Him. Joseph was distraught and tried to leave Mary when he found that she was pregnant before they were married and assumed she was a slut. An angel appeared to Joseph and explained to him that she was pregnant because of the Holy Spirit. Mary and Joseph got married and had children of their own after Jesus.

Jacob, an unknown Jew from the line of David. I think Heli was Mary's father.
If the carefully kept lineages would have not been destroyed by Herod, it would have helped, don't you think? But there were learned men who accepted Jesus' lineage. Simeon, for example.

According to Bible customs, if a man died childless his brother would marry his brothers widow.
People think that what happened, was that Heli was Joseph's Mother's first husband, but he died childless, so his brother Jacob, married his brothers widow, and fathered Joseph.
Make sense?

I do believe he was the son of Heli; but I know he was of the line of Jacob. Jacob (Israel) was one of his ancestors, that's why they had to travel to Bethlehem for the census.
