Bus travel tends to favoured today by people who
1. Need to do short journeys
2. Who need to get on an off in many places
3. Don't have a car.
With discount plane tickets few people choose to go by bus any more. Six hundred miles will probably take you 8 hours by bus, but an hour by plane (+ travel time to and from the airport, checkin, security and waiting around).
For less than 300 miles bus can be superior to flyings.
In europe, Japan, Korea and parts of China train is the way to go because it is fast, efficeint and you get off in the middle of the city.
I would say, only take the bus if the plane tickets are very expensive.

Greyhound can be very cheap and save you a lot of money if you're the only one going on the trip.
If you have friends going with you, I suggest you drive.
I don't suggest flight... it'll be way too expensive and it doesn't save you that much time.

I have not ridden the bus in many years,
but if you look at the included link,
you can read someone's opinion who has.
