Best food items to start out with for a well-stocked kitchen?

I don't need appliance suggestions...Something I'm doing to help my daughter get started in her new home. There are always basics (like flour, sugar,) and then there's those items that you never think about until you reach for them. The list can include perishables, too. And a good way to present them to her? She deserves the help--she worked very hard to get the house in shape to move into.

Update:

....and she's going to LOVE those humorous suggestions, too! She loves to laugh after coming through all the stress!

When I first got my own place, I forgot a colander, so I always suggest that! A pancake turner, rubber scrapers, serving spoons both slotted and not, a ladle, a large and a small frying pan, a dutch oven, and a saucepan. A set of nesting mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons, a 9x13 pan and some smaller ones, a glass casserole with a lid. A good set of knives is important, too.

She should get some basic spices- garlic powder, Italian seasoning, cinnamon, chili powder, seasoned salt, dried onions, parsley, and poultry seasoning. Pancake syrup, cooking oil, non-stick spray, salad dressings. Pantry items like evaporated milk, tuna, soups, veggies, canned tomatoes and sauce, pasta, rice, and beans.

A good cookbook would be thoughtful, so would kitchen towels. You could pack an assortment of utensils in a nice basket lined with towels, or the ingredients for a pasta dinner in a large stockpot.
