What is the meaning of ARMS when used in a hotel/boarding house title.?

Such as "Memorial Arms" hotel etc. A friend suggested that it is an acronym for Apartments & Rooms with Maid Service but I have exhausted my resources in trying to locate a definitive answer.

I don't think it's an acronym. "Arms" (meaning pictures of weapons) used to be popular names for inns. It's like saying "kings" or "union" -- not a lot of serious meaning attached.

"Arms" was originally used to indicate that an inn, pub, hotel, etc. that had a coat of arms on their sign, to indicate that they had some kind of noble patron. I imagine this is not true of all places with that in the name (especially in America), They may just be trying to sound fancy.

"Arms" is a standard component name for pubs and hotels.

The origin is heraldic - coats of arms - as many inns historically were named after the heraldic arms of the local landowner or some dignitary to be honoured.
