Can a business force an employee to pay for gas to deliver orders?

My husband recently got a new job at a restaurant. He was hired mostly as a pizza delivery guy. My husband asked how the gas is supplied and the boss told him he had to pay for the gas himself. Is this legal? I mean, that's just ridiculous. I don't see how it could be possible that a business could force their employee to pay for gas to make deliveries for the business.

Can anyone tell me if this is legal?

And could anyone find anything online verifying whether it is or not?

THANK YOU! :)

they do NOT have to pay for the gas or mileage.........

keep good records because you can write this expense off on your taxes......for 2009 the write-off was 55 cents a mile.

Is the employer paying for mileage at all? If yes, then that would pay for gas, wear & tear on the car, etc. If not, I'd seriously reconsider doing delivery for this restaurant, especially with the price of gas these days.

The company isn't required to reimburse him for gas.

Your husband isn't required to work for them.
