Can I remove myself from my parent's car insurance policy without them?
I am looking to trade in my SUV for a car. My dad does not want me to do this so he is refusing to switch the car insurance from my Xterra to the new car. So I decided that I would just remove myself from the policy and get my own insurance. Would it be possible to do this if he refuses to call?
Thanks everyone. I guess I forgot to mention that I work FT and my parents are moving later this year anyway.

As it's in their name you can't make any changes to the policy, only they can.
You have 2 choices. First is to check that you can get cover on your own for your chosen vehicle and that you can afford it. If you can go for it and let your parents know that you have sorted out insurance for your car and that they should remove you from their insurance, unless they fancy paying for something they are not getting.
Second choice is to leave it awhile and wait until your dad comes around. Not only does he feel that he has the right to dictate to you about your chosen vehicle, but he will most probably feel that he has the right to dictate to you about your living arrangements etc and can make your life a living hell.
You decide. Good luck.

Not wise to push it if you are still living at home. What if he tells you the car can't be parked in the driveway? What if he has it towed to prove a point, that it is his property?
You have a problem in your family dynamic it seems, and I suggest you work with, not against your father until you can move into your own place, otherwise you are facing both a higher insurance bill for your own policy, and a strained relationship in the home.
And no, you cannot make any changes to a policy that is in his name, and I highly doubt his broker or agent is going to write you a stand-alone policy, either. Without your dad's co-operation, you would have to find another broker to deal with.
If your parents are moving, and you are not going to the same address, you will not qualify to be on their policy at that time anyway.

You can't make any changes to your parents' policy, but you could certainly get your own. However, having your own policy could end up costing twice as much. Your dad might also decide that if you are a big enough man to buy your own car and insurance, there is no need for you to be living under his roof.

You can be on more then one insurance policy, so you can just go out and get your own.
Of course if your parents are expecting you to pay your part of the insurance you'll need to tell them you will no longer be paying it. Then they'll have you removed from theirs.
Either way thats going to cause a lot of stress at home.

Your dads insurance policy is nothing to do with you ! He can get his car insured for any driver if he wants to.
You can likewise buy your own insurance policy which will have nothing to do with your dad.
You will not be able to make any changes to your dads insurance policy without his consent.

Not your policy, not your call.
Get your own insurance and leave dad in the dust.
