You probably don't have a firewire port on your dell laptop, neither one of mine had one.

VHS is analog and needs to be converter to digital.

    ANALOG

*If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder… or VHS-c...

You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 85.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

Anytime you convert analog to digital, you will lose quality, but loss of quality is better than losing all those old memories.

**Please Note There is no 8mm or Hi 8 to VHS Adapter that currently exists. This type of VHS Adapter only exists with VHS-C tape

Your computer would need to have an IEEE 1394 interface “FireWire” port. Some laptops have a slot for a FireWire adapter card. Then you would need video editing software that would allow you to capture the analog (VHS) video and convert it to digital (computer). Look for a program that supports FireWire capture (Live capture).

If your camera has an A/V port there are A/V to RCA cables available. You also need an Analog to DVD converter cable for your laptop that uses the USB port (RCA to USB). You will use the included software to make DVDs. Also your computer system needs to meet the system requirements for both of these processes. There has been some mixed reviews over the converter cables and it seems to be the result of the users not having the computer processing speed and memory.

You may just want to use a service that does all this for you. On-line prices run about $30.00 or more per tape.
