Hill's Presciption Diet C/D other alternatives?

My five year old female Shihtzu just came home today from having bladder surgery to remove kidney stones. She has been prescribed Hill's C/D prescription diet. I have given her the canned and the kibbles and she really hates it and will not eat it. I have also purchased the treats. She does like the treats but won't eat anything else.

Is there anyone out there that has had a similar situation. If so what did you feed your dog? I do not want the kidney stones to come back so I have to be very strict with her diet.

Update:

I just worry bc she is not eating. I have to give her meds and usually put the meds in her food. She won't eat.

I have tried warming up the food, she wont touch it. Worried...

I personally wouldn't like to feed any Science Diet food to my dogs, however, since your dog just had bladder surgery it may be best to keep her on the prescription food until you can fully research the ingredients and possibly find another food with the same or very similar ingredients. As for her not liking the food...just keep trying, she will eat it when she gets hungry enough, dogs wont starve themselves.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHMGq

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

    Hey,

My friend Rose was about 50 when she first came upon a new natural kidney healing program. Her life had been devastated, literally ruined with stage 4 kidney disease. She had no life, no job because she was too sick to work, not enough energy to see her friends and sat around most of the time watching TV. She basically was waiting around for kidney failure and to start dialysis. She is much better now. She followed a natural method with great results. Here are the ingredients:

Ground Whole Grain Corn, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Mill Run, Chicken Liver Flavor, Calcium Sulfate, Soybean Oil, Flaxseed, Iodized Salt, L-Lysine, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Dicalcium Phosphate, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Potassium Chloride, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols & Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

I personally would never feed that to any of my animals, If you want to feed a prescription type diet, there are higher quality ones out there. Royal Canin IVD also has one, I'd probably feed it before SD.

Take a look at this page: http://www.wysong.net/bladder-stones-struvite/

I like wysong foods but I really like their ideology that dogs should have a variety of food, especially fresh real food and kibble should be used as a back up. I think they also have a veterinary line (http://www.wysong.net/prescription-cat-dog-foods.p... but it is harder to find.

Join the Yahoo K9 Kidney Diet group - a group that assists owners of dogs with kidney and bladder stones.

You'll need to know what type of stone. I worked with a dog with calcium oxylate bladder stones - the Fuzzer Diet (a homemade diet) has kept him healthy and stone free for nearly 6 years.

Have you tried warming the food up for her? My cat had stones and he wouldn't eat it unless it was warm, smells better when warm. Keep her on that prescription food until the vet gives you the ok to change it. Than you might be able to find a regular food with urinary track medications in it.

I don't know of any off hand. And don't listen to people telling you it's "crap food", without taking the time to realize it's a PRESCRIPTION DIET for crystals. High Quality dog foods rarely ever carry prescription food. C/D is not the tastiest food, but she will eat it eventually, no dog will starve itself out of stubbornness :).

    Good luck with your pooch!
