That depends on the DVD player that you buy.

normal dvd players can only read videos that are burned on using a program like windvd creator or windows movie maker.
if you just put a video file on, such as .avi, you will have a data dvd, which can be opened up using a computer with a dvd drive, but it won't play as a dvd. You would have to open it up using windows media player or another video player.

If you want to burn any video files(all video formats) to DVD, and can play well on normal DVD player, you should use the right program to burn standard video DVD from your videos, there is an easy way and the better choice, you can try RZ DVD Creator, it can create/burn standard video DVD from any videos, it can burn long videos into one DVD, it can burn multi videos into one DVD, it can auto fit the size, it can directly convert and burn any videos to DVD(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc). You can yahoo or google search RZ DVD Creator and download it, work well, user friendly, most functionality, hope it can help you.
