Hey.
This is not what you want to hear but I have been a Home Care Assistant for the last three months and it is THE worst job I have EVER had.
It's been the hardest most horrible 3 months of my life. I live in rented property and used to work for an Engineering Consultancy but got made redundand so I got the job for maneys sake and it's the biggest mistake of my life.
I have to get up every morning at 5:30 then the shir#fts are stupid, obviously you get breaks but I could be working from six in the mroning till 10 the same night, go to bed cos i'm that tired and then get up the day after to go straight to work again. The service users, most are nice but you don't get appriciated at all and some shout at you. You have to mop up poo at all time in the day and the pay is rubbish. And also you have to work weekends and you never have a social life. I live in the same house as my boyfriend and I once went three days without actually speaking to him.
You don't get any holidays as it's a care job, only the ones you've book so you have to work Christmas Day, all New Year and you really miss out.
Thank god I have got a new job and leave in three weeks as i've got a trainee role and am doing engineering at college.
If you think you have what it takes, go for it. But i've hated every waking minute it's seriously made me low and I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone unless it was part time.

Well for a start the one above has not give a good impression there are many people including my sister who do this job and love it.
I am a nurse but work in a hospital as prefer this.
Before you go to any interview read very carefully your job description as they may well ask you what you think your role is to make sure you know what you are applying for.
They may ask you what your best skills are so good communication patience and understanding are needed for this work.
they may well ask why you have choosen this career path
ask about training as normal you are requied to have nvq level 2 for this and they should offer training
all care agencies operate differently but my sister does odd hours due to her having children she starts work at 9.30am finishes around 12 then goes back out again at 6pm until 11 at night. at weekends she normal does morning until evening with gabs in between but remember she has children and fits her work around this.
Normal your job may involve going to clients house and getting them washed and dressed making some breakfast then leaving. or it may well be just to give them personal care like a bath shower or even some shopping as i said your job description should tell you what you will be doing.
each client will be different in needs and have a care package of plan as to what they require. You may have several clients in one day.
normal hours are what you want as on hourly rate and extra for weekends and also set clients so they get to know you and and you know them.
it is unsociable hours main morning and evening work and of course weekends some pay extra for this some do not. normal some placed well established do pay holiday pay but some do not
good luck it is a job you really need to think about for the sake of the people you will be giving the care too. it is rewarding and you do have advantage of main working on your own unless the care requires two people
