I'm a songwriter, How do I sell my songs?

I've been writing songs in and out of bands for many years now. I am an accomplished multi instrumentalist and I have been composing music from various different genre's using a blend of different instrument's.

I would like to start selling my songs for use in any medium, how do I go about doing this?

Thanks x

Certainly the common answers here, getting gigs and selling merch is the best way to get noticed. You will be able to stage them relatively cheaply or even pop along to local open mic nights, and build a local reputation.

It wouldn't hurt to setup a Myspace, ilike or youtube page either. ITunes is a good place to get your music, but it won't sell unless people know to look for it. I think it's only about $9.99 to post an album on ITunes, and you can get return on that!

The elusive "record deal" of days gone by has really given way to the digital forum, best to start there.

Have fun, it IS after all! :)

Number One : You NEVER want to sell your songs! Then you lose all rights to them. What you want to do is pitch your songs to publishing companies, singers, or record companies hopefully for someone to record and you to get royalties. Before you ever publish or send anything anywhere, make sure you have protected yourself by copyrighting your material. You can do this in a group. You can get forms online or check at your local library. I suggest you get involved with your local songwriters association....start doing open mic nights...most towns have them. Before you send your songs to a record or publishing company, you must first send a letter asking permission to submit material. Unless you get permission, your material will end up in file 13 (the garbage) . Record and publishing companies are very careful to protect themselves from accepting unsolicited material. Look for new and upcoming artists who might be interested in singing your material. Again, make sure you are protected. Before you sign any papers with anybody, have your own music attorney read the fine print and make sure you are getting the best deal possible!

    Good luck!

well mi'lad... Do your song suck or not?

Oh my! I'm afraid I answered your question with a question! What a pickle.

No but seriously! The secret to it is...wait...write up a contract entitling me to 10%(plus 50% interest rate) and I'll let you in on it.

Well, you need artists to give them to ok, so there are 2 artists I know of that would possibly welcome the material, Daniel Evans and 2Grand, both are on FB, I am in touch with them both plus other people also. 2Grand have their own management team so I would approach them and Daniel. Also, have you thought about writing to Louis Walsh, he is always looking for new material for his groups, again, on FB
