simple chemistry density question?

ok im doing a lab report and i have a simple question on density

i know its mass/volume

but

i have a mass sample o a rock that is 5.783g

measures in water that has risen 3.1 degree

the water that is in the container with nothing else is 35ml

with the rock it rises to 38.1ml

do i subtracted 38.1ml - 35ml to get the water amount or do i use 38.1ml?

im suppose to ind the density of the rock

    If the volume in the container rises by 3.1ml when you add the rock it means that the volume of the rock was 3.1ml.

    use 5.783 / 3.1 and change the units if the question asks for specific units to be used.
