Why you shouldnt sleep on Roy Jones Jr when he fights Bhop?

ill keep it simple

Roy is about as sharp as hes been throughout his career. watching him fight jeff lacy (olympian, national amatuer champ, and PAL champ), he fought with almost the same blazing speed that he had in the 90s. Lacy looked lost and confused at how Roy was moving. leading with the right, doubling and tripling left hooks, moving around superbly on his feet.

so why then, you ask, did he get whipped by tarver, johnson, calzage, and apparently danny green?

Roys kind of a pussy, ill say. the left hook that tarver KOd him with in their second fight changed his life. it left him traumatized at the fact that he was not invincible, and that if a professional boxer hit him with a clean shot, something that had not happened yet in his career, if could very well in fact knock him out. Roy learned this in Tarver-Jones II. He forgot it for a while in Tarver-Jones III. he clowned on Tarver for a while. in round 5 he even looked comically superior, like a pro fighting some kid off the street. but then Tarver reminded Roy of the lesson he learned in Tarver-Jones II, that punches hurt. Roys spirit was dampened and by the end Roy just was just fighting to survive and not to win, because he didnt want to get hurt again.

Johnson simply landed an overhand right over Roys lazy left hand. another traumatic episode for Roy that he would carry to the Calzage fight. Roy started out good in this fight, even scoring the only knockdown of the fight, but Calzage is just a good fighter and stuck with it. he kept pushing and eventually he started catching up to Roy. again the memories from past KOs came back to Roy and he just wanted to survive rather than win.

then comes the fight fresh in everybodys mind that seems to convince everyone that Roys done. people see the highlight of Danny Green landing one to the back of Roys head, but they dont see the first part of the round where it looked like Roy was going to cruise to a victory based on just talent superiority. Danny pressed and Roy again froze up. he got cornered and caught a rabbit punch. from there once again he just went into survival mode. the ref saw this and stopped it in the first round.

ok now for the finale

what makes Bhop a different fighter than these other guys is that he is very passive. hes often accused of doing too little in the ring and just cruising to methodical victories based on out boxing opponents. he rarely stops higher level opponents and when he does it usually very late in the fight. you cant outbox Roy. his speed (which IS still there) will make you look like a fool. the way to beat him is to go after him like a mad man and he will back down against the aggression. Bhop is not aggresive at all, therefore i expect to see Roy be very comfortable. when Roys comfortable, hes the best.

Update:

...the best EVER that is

Roy Jones is probably the best fighter that I have ever seen live and regardless of what happens/happened at the tail-end of his career, he is undoubtedly one of the best of all time, however I think that his best days are long gone and they will never come back. As far as the fights that you mentioned:

I was kind of surprised to see Roy dominate Lacy the way he did BUT Jeff Lacy has fought like crap since the Joe Calzaghe loss and despite his amateur credentials and being a former world champion, when Jones fought him, he was not a world class fighter anymore.

The third Tarver-Jones fight simply showed that Roy was gun-shy after being knocked out consecutively twice. He showed shades of his former brilliance in the fourth and fifth rounds but as you stated- he was there to show that he could go the distance and not be knocked out again and he almost did get knocked out in the eleventh round of that fight. I honestly think that if Roy was busier in that fight, he would have won but he was just too scared of getting caught again.

Glen Johnson did not "simply land an overhand right"- Jones was losing that fight on all three scorecards going into the ninth round and Johnson's pressure was simply too much for him. This fight really showed how much his reflexes had deteriorated.

The Calzaghe fight further showed how deteriorated Roy is- if it was a prime Jones, he would have slipped Calzaghe's volume punches and countered him with even faster combinations than Calzaghe's. Roy would have either stopped him or beat him by a lopsided decision but you know what? They didn't fight in Roy's prime and Calzaghe swamped him for 11 of the 12 rounds.

The Green fight is the only one (along with the second Tarver fight) where you could try to make an excuse as to why Roy lost at this stage of his career.

As far as the rematch with Hopkins goes, I really can't see Roy winning although we'll never know until they actually step in the ring to fight on April 3rd. If they had fought back when Roy was the light heavyweight champ and Hopkins was the middleweight champ, I think Jones beats him by a unanimous decision similar to their first fight. However, I think that Roy has shown much more signs of slippage than Hopkins has in recent years. Roy still does have fast hands but his problem is that he simply does not move them enough anymore. Hopkins may not be "aggressive" but he does make fights ugly when he gets on the inside and I have a strong suspicion that he'll be able to get on the inside in his rematch with Roy. Roy will have to box on the outside and stay away from the ropes but I think Hopkins will apply enough pressure to back him up and take a wide unanimous decision. However, like I said before, all we can do is speculate- we won't really know what exactly will happen between them again until we watch them fight.

We all have our favorites and it's tough when they keep fighting past their primes and judging by the fact that you have a Roy Jones picture as your avatar, you probably think that Roy will win and you very well may be correct but I don't think anyone is "sleeping" on Roy, I think that most are just making well-educated guesses on what they think will happen in his rematch with Hopkins based on what they've seen from him in recent years compared to when he was the pound for pound best and the fighter of the decade for the 1990s.

Glad to see some RJ fans are still out there. He's my favorite all-time and I honestly believe he should go down as one of the top 2 or 3 all-time. I'm not going to watch this fight, breaking a 16 or so year streak - something has to stop these two guys from continuing, its not good in anyway for the sport.

Roy Jones simply can't withstand shots around the ear and head area anymore, at all. Since that shot he took from Johnson to the ear/back of the head he hasn't been able to take those shots without completely losing his equilbrium...I don't think Hopkins will be able to land a significant shot there, but it is a troubling health concern.

Hopkins, despite what the media writes, has basically just mastered exploiting flaws in the scoring system more than anything else, he knows that there are only 3 mins per round and that if he can maul and hold for 1:30 or 2 of them there is no way he can get blown out - whats crazy is that he loses as many as he wins now, but somehow he is still at the top of the p4p rankings. He is still relevant due to his promotional team, the truth is he is far more comparable to John Ruiz than Marvin Hagler at this point in his career.

I'm still picking Roy to win this, he is still much faster and can throw flashier combinations - that is how Calzaghe outpointed Hopkins, and I think Roy could do the same.

    Couple quick things:

    1. I heard some video blogger the other day talking about how if you watch their first fight you could see Roy fading down the stretch and Hopkins coming on....its this type of nonsense that drives this fight. If you watch their first fight, the truth is you could make the case that Roy Jones won every round easily. Gil Clancy had him up about 9-0 at one point, and historically the practice is that judges will try to find rounds late in a championship fight to give to the guy who is getting blown out - that is what happened and why it was 116-112 instead of 120-108 or 119-109 like it actually was.

    2. Everyone anaylzing this has been referring to the fact that the reason Hopkins has maintaned his status is because he "mastered the basics" while Roy went off pure natural ability. This is trash. First off, Hopkins lost 2x to Jermaine Taylor who seemingly could be beat by little more than the basics, he lost to Calzaghe who is "technically sound" as any fighter trained in a basement by his professional musician dad could be. Roy Jones won basically every award an amateur boxer could win, if you look back at his accomplishments as an amatuer its amazing - had he not been completely robbed in the Olympics we probably would be talking about him as the greatest US amateur fighter of the past 50 years. Roy Jones was unorthodox, he developed a style around his natural gifts, he didn't use a devoid style because of them. There have been really fast guys before and guys who hit very big, there is a reason why thats not all it takes to be the most dominant fighter in the world for over a decade. Unless its a Hollywood fight scene, there isn't a textbook way to put your hands behind your back and knock a guy out.

Sometimes the problem with Roy is he's way too comfortable. He could have beaten Tarver 3 to neil, he just let the minutes gone by and easily gave the round to the opponent with pleasure. It has a become a bad habit of his. I think BHOp will win this one via UD. I wont sleep i promise, i like both very much, more so RJJ.

This fight should be dubbed as "Milking". That's all they're trying to do here, milk as much money as they can on a pointless fight. Come on dude did you see Roy Jr.'s previous outing? That was embarrassing as f*ck! He should just hang em up.
