  • Is it possible to slim sleeves without making armhole smaller?

I have a dress shirt where the sleeve is the correct length but it's a bit wide and somewhat "fluffly". I'd like to have them tightened but my local seamstress doesn't speak english.

I'd like to know what to expect when having sleeves tightened or slimmed down a bit, does it require making the armhole smaller or is it possible to do it without altering the arm hole as well.

  • Plug in timer for aircon?

Is it safe to use an external plug in timer for an airconditioner?

I live in HK, we use three pin plugs like in the UK, running 220v. My landlord was to cheap to get anything with a timer. The airconditioner plugs into a wall socket right next to it up high on a wall.

I've used those timers in the past on appliances like fans and dehumidifiers. I don't know if an airconditioner, which draws a lot more power, is safe to use with those things.

  • Slow responding external drive?

I just bought a WD Mybook 6tb to add to my two 2tb (seagate and wd) and one four tb seagate external drives already connected to my pc. This drive is powered and is connected to the rear usb 3.0 on my pc.

While the transfer rates are decent,100-170MB/s I  have noticed that when I sometimes click on the drive on my Computer window (windows 7) that shows all the drives, and I select the drive, it takes a few seconds, from 10 to almost half a minute before the drive opens. Usually it sort of hangs, the mouse does that thinking animation or I see the "not responding" text on the top of the window. After a while it's ok and everything works good.

I've not noticed this behavior with my other external drives, usually when I click on them, they open up right away and there is no delay to when I can access the files. I've done hdtune tests and scanned it with the wd tool and there are no problems shown. I'm wondering if this is normal for a 6tb drive or for this particular drive or if it's indicative of an issue.

  • External Hard drive for Mac?

What are the differences? I see external drives that are marketed specifically Apple computers. As far as I know the only difference is mac products use Fat32 and other pc's use ntfs. Would there be any negatives in buying a "regular" drive and formatting it myself to fat32, do the drives meant for mac computers come with any specific software that may be useful?

  • Intermittent tooth pain?

I've been getting tooth pain on and off on the rear part of my lower right side the past couple of weeks. It doesn't happen every day. The pain comes and goes and usually doesn't last for more than 40 minutes. Sometimes it goes away within 2-5 minutes. Sometimes it can occur several times a day. I noticed brushing when I feel pain helps to get  rid of it or lessen it.

I would say the level of pain is a 3 out of 10. This pain feels like it's in my gums rather than the surface of the teeth itself. I haven't noticed any sensitivity or pain when I eat, drink or press down on my teeth. Earlier today I noticed I had also started to feel it in the front part of my lower right side.

  • Power strip causing appliance to behave oddly?

So I have this dehumidifier and I noticed that when it's plugged to a power strip along with different appliances like a fan and lamp it behaves differently from when I plug it in a single wall socket.

When it's plugged in to the power strip, I use manual mode and select one of the three fan speeds. Usually low. After two or three minutes the fan will automatically go on high. The indicator still shows it at 1 and when I cycle through the different speeds there is no change in the fan speed.

When I plug it into the wall socket, it works as intended. I can select whatever fan speed I want and it won't automatically go on high after a few minutes.

None of the other appliances that I have plugged on the same strip have exhibited any abnormal issues.

Is this a voltage thing, or something to do with the appliance itself? I've checked the voltage on the strip and it's more or less the same as the wall outlets.

  • appliance not working as intended?

I purchased a philips dehumidifier and I noticed the fan which has three speeds, sometimes automatically goes into full even when in manual mode where the user is supposed to be able to select the fan speed themselves. Sometimes it happens after 5 mins, other times after a longer while, there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

I understand there may be a reason for this, maybe prevent overheating or to make it more efficient, maximizing airflow while the compressor is on and all that.

The thing is, there is nothing in the manual to suggest any of this and manual mode is supposed to give the user full control. When I called the customer service, they did not appear to know this was a thing. They tested their own machine upon my insistence and confirmed it's the same but can't offer up an explanation.

It seems like there should be something in consumer law that covers this as it seems like a basic thing manufacturers should make their customers aware of.

  • dehumidifier behavior ?

I recently bought a philips dehumidifier and i noticed the fan, which has three adjustable speeds, automatically adjusts itself to maximum even when in manual mode where the user is supposed to be able to set the settings manually. I'm wondering if this sounds like normal behavior.

Also, with this particular model, I set the humidity target to 40% and sometimes I come back and it has reset itself to 60. Also in manual mode.

With the first thing, I understand there may be a reason for the fan to increase in speed, maybe a way to keep from overheating or to maximize efficiency and move as much air while the coils are cool.  It seems odd that this is not explained in the user manual or that there are fan speed controls if they are going to be overriden, so I'm thinking it may just be a fault.

The second thing, with the humidity setting changing itself definitely seems like a fault.

  • Plastic perfume bottle bloated/swelling?

I bought some Victorinox mens cologne which unfortunately came in a plastic bottle. It's a regular square shaped bottle but I can tell that it's slightly bloated or swelling, the front and rear especially look like they are pushing out a bit.

I'm wondering if this would mean the stuff is going bad or if it's a normal, expected reaction. I know alcohol and plastic aren't a great mix but it's a nice smelling cologne and I wasn't planning on keeping it long. I don't know if I should open it to see if it will reduce the swell or maybe it's best to replace it with a newer bottle.

  • 40% battery drain on a 2 hour video call?

I know it varies from one phone to another, battery capacity, screen size, wifi signal and all that, but on a recent 2 hour video call on viber, i got 40-41% battery drain.

Does that seem like good battery consumption, average, poor? It's a new phone, samsung s10 with the older firmware, not yet updated and it has a 3300mah battery.

  • Phone not working after getting wet?

I got soaked in a rainstorm and my phone got really wet. I noticed it turned off and got really hot. Since the battery not removable there was nothing I could do.

I kept it next to my dehumidifier for two days and dried it out but it still does not turn on.

I try to charge it, there are no sounds or inidcators that it s charging but it does get quite hot, high 40 s celcius according to my infrared thermometer.

What are the chances this will work again, maybe given more time or if I take it for repair? Does the fact that it responds in a way to the charger being plugged indicate one way or another if it s a good or bad thing? I already have a new phone, I just want to be able to turn it on and get my data.

  • water stains, non magnetic metal surface?

We have this metallic surface on the wall next to our stove in our new apartment. It looks like brushed steel but it's not magnetic so I'm not sure what it is. I'm assuming it's just a cosmetic thing instead of having any function like keeping the heat from the stove from damaging the tiles on the wall.

Over the past months it has started to show what appear to be water stains in little blotches, uniformly over most of the surface, only we have not used or cleaned the area with water and I cannot remove the "stains with a damp wipe.

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea what metal this is and how best to clean and care for it.

  • same franchise difference prices?

I just went to a sporting goods store where they were offering the same discount as their other store across town. The only difference is that one store has starting prices much higher so the discount and the prices are actually higher for the same product at one store compared to the other.

This is a franchise store with lots more shops across town but I was only able to look at two. I don't know if this is an illegal practice for a franchise with the same name, branding, logo etc...

  • HDD transfer rates varies?

I just bought a WD40ezex 4Tb 3'' drive. HDtune tests ok, benchmark and error scan is all good.

I've noticed that when I transfer files to the drive, I get wildly varying speeds. I can transfer a single file and it will go at 20-50MB/s while sometimes whole folders filled with files will move at 80-100. Other times, single files transfer at 120 or si MB/s.

Seems totally random, I transfer them all from the same source which is my main drive running the OS.

  • Error check with programs in the background?

On HDtune, i know running programs in the background can affect the readings but is it ok to have windows and downloads running while doing an error check? I have two new 4tb drives I need to check and it may take several hours.

  • So shingled drives are my only option?

I'm looking at current available 4tb drives and from what I've read both Seagate and WD are now offering shingled drives for their consumer grade, drives around 150usd or less. Also Toshiba which is my preferred brand is not clear about which are shingled drives.

Since my purpose for this next drive is for storing files, I guess it's fine but it sucks that there are no longer PMR options that I can tell.

  • Hit a car in response to almost being run over?

So if someone almost gets run over by a car and in response pokes the vehicle with the rubber tip of a cane or walking stick, get the attention of the driver, can that action be prosecutable.

I'm sure there are laws against hitting cars or damaging other peoples property that this falls under.

If this scenario happens where there are no other witnesses and the pedestrian wasn't actually hit by the car and there was no damage to the vehicle from the pedestrian hitting the car.

  • broken window handle tenant or landlord responsibility.?

So in my part of the world, the wording isn't clear, normally this would go under normal wear and tear and generally the landlord would fix this unless they, for whatever reason were unwilling, then it would probably be within their rights not to depending on whats included in the contract.

In this particular case, the window handle breakage means the window cannot be properly closed or sealed, leaving the rest of the household exposed the the elements, particularly rain as it is approaching the rainy and monsoon season.

Given that this is the case, would there be a higher legal obligation for the landlord to solve this matter since it leaves the tenants in a dwelling exposed to the elements?

Also, in case of any damage brought on by rain, would that be the the landlord or tenants responsibility.

  • Rot under sink?

Previous tenant in my new place must have had a leak under the sink, the wood has expanded and there is yellowing on the white laminate. There is also an odor, it's not too bad but it builds up when we keep the cabinet doors closed overnight which is why I open it to air it out. Sometimes I can smell the odor on the pots and other kitchen items I keep down there.

I have tried spraying it with lysol and a weak concentration of bleach but the smell persists. I will try again to see if a strong concentration will work but if it doesn't what are my options. I did not notice it when checking the place and landlord is too cheap to do anything about it.
