water stains, non magnetic metal surface?

We have this metallic surface on the wall next to our stove in our new apartment. It looks like brushed steel but it's not magnetic so I'm not sure what it is. I'm assuming it's just a cosmetic thing instead of having any function like keeping the heat from the stove from damaging the tiles on the wall.

Over the past months it has started to show what appear to be water stains in little blotches, uniformly over most of the surface, only we have not used or cleaned the area with water and I cannot remove the "stains with a damp wipe.

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea what metal this is and how best to clean and care for it.

Try a little baking soda on your damp wash rag.

Sounds like it might be aluminum, and the splotches/stains might be able to be buffed out with a steel wool and a bit of elbow grease.

If it is not magnetic and it is metal, then the likelihood is that it is an aluminium splash guard, protecting the actual wall.

Might be an aluminium splash guard.  Try showing us a picture.
