Potential problem with Green, White, Checker Rule?

Imagine for a moment there are 10 cars on the lead lap, 5 cars -1 lap, 5 cars -2 laps, and so on. (Thinking Bristol, Richmond but the idea still holds everywhere) With two laps to go say one of the top 10 crashes. Due to the extra laps and several failed green, white, checkers should the wrecked driver deserve to finish in the 40th position?

Update:

On one restart during the 500 Harvick, Truex and Biffle nearly wrecked running 1-2-3, had they gone around it would've been a mess!

How about my fix for the potential problem? Only lead lap cars can participate in extra laps. This would make our driver finish 20th instead of 40th potentially. Who the heck cares about these guys laps down, especially if they are potential wrecks.

I never liked the old green-white-checker system especially on the super speedways they can barely hit top speed in 2 laps

IDK if i like the new one either

i think i would like to see them add a lap

i do agree that a driver in the top ten finishing in the bottom ten due to an "overtime" crash does seem unfair....but think of all the other sports where a team fails to do anything all game, ties it at the end, then wins in overtime.....its not always what you do, or how you do it, sometimes its just when

Well, that's one of the downsides for the drivers. Most of the drivers don't like this new rule at all. Bottom line, NASCAR made this rule for the fans, not the drivers. This rule may or may not last in my opinion. Yes, all of the fans want to see the race ending in a shootout sort of thing but the drivers also have to be considered. When you have drivers like Mark Martin complaining about it that's really saying something. It is going to cause crashes and what not no questions asked. But then again many drivers will benefit from it. Take Jr for example at the 500. He gained 8 spots but on the other hand it put Gordon in a crash. It's just like anything I suppose, there's big positives in it along with the big negatives. It's a learning process and it could very well be altered for the 2011 season in my opinion. Time will tell.

JimBob if you look hard enough you can find fault with any rule in NASCAR. The fact is is there was an existing problem before the "green, white, checkered" finishes. NASCAR tried to improve on that by adding the first rule but still problems existed. So NASCAR tried to improve on the rule and make it 3 attempts to finish under green flag racing conditions.

There will never be perfect racing conditions. Some things you just can't prevent ... but NASCAR is at least giving it one hell of a shot by allowing 3 attempts at a race to the finish so that a race doesn't end under caution. You really can't do any better than that.

Yes they should. I know it sounds rough, but that is the rule, and we play the game by the rules laid out.

Drivers don't like, I'm sure. And I know it won't be too long till someone with a dominate car gets "robbed" of a victory. But I still don't care.

This rule is about the fans only. Fans who pay good money, and in alot of cases, plan their vacations around attending a certain event, deserve the best possible chance at seeing a " Live" race to the finish.

i'll be in the minority but i dislike this rule immensely. 3 times to get result. i see a lot of drivers complaining about this rule as the season goes on, especially if they were leading after attempt 1 and 2. it's almost as if nascar is trying to stage a result. i never have been bothered with a race ending under yellow. sometimes that is just how it shakes out and it isn't so common that a change was needed.

This rule is all in regards to the followers and definite, I do like it lots incredibly. the better element of the race are the ultimate laps and human beings choose to work out a memorable final lap end, like in the present day as an occasion. The drivers on the different hand are not massive followers of the guideline for the main section and that's totally comprehensible. For the drivers it could definately smash a stable day for them or make it a bargain extra advantageous. I see the two factors of it however the three tries at a eco-friendly flag end does make it an over all extra advantageous race for the followers.

I like this new rule. Your local dirt tracks don't do the g-w-c. They go until there is a winner. It creates lots of excitement and this is what NASCAR needs right now. I thought Sunday's finish was one of the best I have seen in a long time. I thought Jamie was out of it, then I was screaming where the hell did Jr come from! Yes, there may be problems, but it is one race.

it doesn't really matter what they do they've already ruined nascar they should of left the cars alone all the drivers hate them and the chase well that was an idiot move why would you change something that has been one way for over 50 years you should have to win over 36 races like all the great drivers have done not 10 that's crap.

I think the new rule made for up to three green white checkers is a better idea. I think its a better idea because before someone would crash on the green white checkered and it would be over. This new rule gives them a better chance of finishing the race.

I guess if they can get their car fixed then I guess they can make up some positions if the guys in front of him keep wrecking.
