What part of Miami to get a hotel?

This will be my first time visiting Miami, and I was booking my hotel online but realized that they have different parts of Miami, such as Miami Beach, Coral Gables, South Beach, etc. Basically my question is what part of miami do u think would be best for me to stay?

I will be visiting Metro Zoo, going on Miami city tour and Biscayne cruise with miami tour company as well as visiting family in Fort Lauderdale (Plantation). I know for sure I want to stay in Miami instead of Ft. Lauderdale. Can someone recommend the best area that may be in the middle of these places? Thanks in advance.

Well you are going to have to have a car to get around to all those places so if I were you I would want to stay by the beach. It's an easy drive over the causeways to get to the area for the cruise and you can probably pick up your tour at a hotel on south beach.

We didn't find driving around Miami difficult, as long as we avoided rush hours.

Coral Gables is nice but more business like. I like Coconut Grove and South Beach, they just seem more relaxed and laid back for vacation.

Hmmmm. Metro Zoo is really far south and way out west. Miami City Tour and Biscayne Cruise probably start near the east-central "Downtown" area. Plantation is a community in SW Broward.

Seems to me, Coral Gables would be centrally located, a nice, clean, safe area, plenty of shopping, things to do (Miracle Mile, etc) several good hotels (look at the large chain hotel sites), not too far from downtown, the beaches, and close enough to major north-south roads to easily connect you. Maybe google "hotels in Coral Gables, FL"
